Ok, so we are landing in St Thomas on 1/1...already have temp place to stay...but feeling a little discouraged because everyone says the island pretty much shuts down for all the celebrations up until close to Feb. I'm not picky on a job situation but need to find one pretty quick after we arrive. Could use some words of encouragement...can be done, right? Don't care if it's a temp job just to make some $$ before something else comes up. My girlfriend works in the hotel industry so I'm thinking she wouldn't have a problem getting a job pretty quick? Any suggestions ? Anything helps.

Looking forward to meeting all of you!

January is high season; the island is not shut down. That said, there will be fewer job opportunities in January because 1)many employers hire seasonal workers right before season starts and 2)the economy is affecting vacation plans so local employers may not need as much staff as in the past. Since you've decided to come you should stop worrying and just figure you'll give it your best shot when you get here, but make sure you've set aside enough money to return home and don't burn all of your bridges on your way down.

Remembering from your previous thread, you are going to STT. The post about Festival was referring to STX. January is a great time to look for a job. The "first round" of seasonal transplants are on the way out. They have to get back for the next semester. I know they say they are staying FOREVER. They lie. They have already registered, or their parents are pressuring them to get back in school. If you have just a little maturity and common sense, you will be fine.

Thanks, makes me feel much better. Kind of like I read somewhere, if you want to really find a job there, you will. Thanks for the messages. I'm ready!!

Please don't feel discouraged. There are opportunities to work. And, if the pay isn't a lot, being that is just you and your girlfriend, you know how to sacrifice where you need to until things get better. And, remember, you could possibly work more than one job. I know a lot of people that do that until they get established. Just keep in mind why you came and it will all work out if you keep your focus and motivation.
