Finding a long-term rental for a non-billionaire

I would just rent a car upon arrival and drive around and look for "For Rent" signs along side the road, this is the way most locals advertise. They rarely put ads in the paper because of cost and the frequency of their apartments coming available. Well if you were going to St. Thomas, I know of a few good places.
