A friend on Water Island says he sees flames at the Bovoni landfill area and that those flames appear to be at least 40ft high (!?) He's seeing this all the way from Water Island... took a picture of it, huge red glow even from that far away.

Any STT southsiders have more info?

Uh, hasn't there been an underground fire at the land fill for like 40 years? I guess this is a flare up.

I am surprised your friend can see fire from Bovoni from Water Island, there are two mountains in the way, not including Hassel Island...

It was burning the whole hillside by the time we finished dinner at Mim's.

Wow, thanks for the pics Jay!

I don't see anything automotive looking in those pictures, but a fire like that looks somehow petrol based to me - like it is tires.

St. Thomas Source article about Bovoni fire

FTA:

"...it appeared that there were no major items, such as e-waste or tires, on fire." "It's basically just household garbage and goods..."

The smoke that is in Jay's pictures does not look like smoke that would come from household garbage to me...

My guess would be plastic lots and lots of plastic. It was burning from the ridge all the way down to the trees looked like bare dirt so it had to be the layers of previously buried trash that were burning and putting off the black smoke.
