FL Keys to USVI

Greetings: My husband and I relocated from NYC to Marathon, Florida Keys 7 years ago. While on vacation in Marathon, sitting by the hotel pool reading the neighborhood newspaper and drinking morning coffee like the typical tourist, I noticed an ad in the classifieds for a legal secretary which I was at the time. I interviewed for the spot on the way to the beach for an afternoon of snorkeling. After returning home, I received an offer. I accepted, packed the essentials along with husband and cocker spaniel into the car, rented the house and left NYC. Since then, I've left the low paying legal field for the more lucrative field of ... serving.

I illustrate this move and ask:

Is this how we would move to St. Croix/St. John? I am hoping that someone/everyone will share their tips/great ideas/pitfalls.

Many thanks. Namaskar! Leanora

Leanora,

This is a very small world. My husband and I moved from Long Island, NY 10 years ago to Marathon. We had been scheduled to move to St. Thomas just about the time hurricane Marilyn hit, so decided to try the Florida Keys. We stayed in Marathon almost 2 years and moved down to Key West, where I am a legal secretary. We have been vacationing in St. Thomas since 1976, and this past December we purchased a studio condo, and this August we are moving there. We have enjoyed living in the Keys but St. Thomas still calls to us and I think living here has totally prepared us for living on St. Thomas. We've been through hurricanes, we conserve water and electric, know the expense of island living, although coming from New York not that much difference, know the slowness of services, although in the Keys alot of this seems to be just lazy people. We are looking forward to real beaches and mountains. Hopefully it won't take too long to get jobs. Basically we are following the same plan to move to St. Thomas as we did to move to the Keys, but we are downsizing alot more. Another thing we have learned living in the Keys, you don't need as much stuff. Actually today we are ordering the boxes we need to mail everything down.

Nancy: This is tooooo funny. Such coincidences.

Are you going to attempt to stay in law in STT? Are you bringing your car?

We mailed alot of stuff from NYC to Marathon also. We found it very cost efficient. How are you going to find a place to live?

Leanora,

I'll take any type of secretarial job or maybe a hotel job. When we lived in Marathon I worked as a secretary in the group sales department at Hawk's Cay Resort. We are not going to bring our car, too old and too many miles on it. We will live in the condo we bought in December.
