To say I am highly amused would be a gross understatement.:D

Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) on Thursday began e-mailing a few hundred owners of its Kindle reading device to explain that it had deleted electronic copies of the George Orwell's "Animal Farm" and "1984" and had refunded the $0.99 purchase price.

The company's virtual book burning has prompted howls of derision across the Internet and spurred impassioned discussion on Amazon's Kindle forums.

"This is precisely the functional equivalent of Barnes & Noble -- or Amazon itself for that matter -- using a crowbar or lock pick to break into your home or business, then stealing back a previous physical book purchase, replacing it with the equivalent value in cash," said privacy advocate Lauren Weinstein in an e-mail message posted to the Interesting People mailing list.

Whoa! I guess I will wait a bit longer before investing. Maybe the price will drop again. 😉

I always tell people its great as long as amazon stays in business. 🙂 All this is spelled out if you read the fine print before you buy. I believe your only allowed to archive a book to amazon and bring it back to your kindle 6 times. I just don't have a problem with it don't see any negatives.

I love books, always have I have always treated them with respect. Can't stand it when people fold pages or mark up a book or ruin the spine. I have 300 to 400 in my small space. And I reread my books as well, so most stay with me. But the kindle is like crack to a book lover. You have a Bookstore in your hands!!!! The screen looks just like a book with no glare and its light and easy to transport anywhere. The even have waterproof covers on sale now...lol

I know (or believe) there is no conspiracy and the article explains it well but my FIRST thought was how odd those were the two books taken off the machines ..... ooooooh, IS big brother watching?

I agree totally. The things mentioned in 1984 and the things occurring now make you wonder... I don't like the idea that books can be taken off of your machine after you've purchased it. I will wait on the kindle... I guess I will have to deal with all my books for a bit longer. I love ebooks and those two I have read (for free) on a university's site (forgot the name)... I read animal farm in like high school but I wanted to read it again with my step-daughter & niece. 1984 was a little too grown up for them (at the time).

I really don't see what the big deal is. Gliches happen with technology all the time, it is controlled by humans after all. Its not like their saying their not going to give it back or not refund anyone. If that was the case I could understand the concern. It almost sounds more like their system was hacked or something with the choices of books that were chosen to be removed.

The only downside is really not being able to share books with friends. But then again I'm a little tired of not getting books back.
