FOR RENT Sign Drive around! NOT

It was suggested to me when I was first looking for a place here on St.Thomas, and is often repeated - just get in your car and drive around looking for the FOR RENT signs , especially for places on the North side.

Well - we tried that on Saturday - 4 hours of up down around, this curve, that nook and cranny. And unless this is the wrong time of year for success in the matter of finding a place - it is definately NOT the way I would suggest it be accomplished.

Great tour of places I've not seen - new photos for my website (to be added today) - but in all we found only about 4 signs. 2 for a 2 bedroom, 2 for a Studio (both signs were most likely for the same place) and 1 for a 3 bedroom.

There has got to be a better way to find a selection of places to rent - and please don't suggest the Island Trader - there is still a missing secret that is not being told OR a very pressing (????) need for another way for folks to find a place here.

I get the feeling that most home/property owners are NOT into a listing service type thing? Hmmmm, another island thing? Or a very real shortage of housing - even in low season?

Word of mouth is the best way If you know someone who is moving. Most landlords will not advertise. They want folks who are going to stay. And not skip out after 3 -months. Can afford the place and not trash it.

The Island Trader, word of mouth and signs on the road are ways to find a place. I think word of mouth is the best too. You may also try a place like "Secretarily Services," in Red Hook Plaza. They usually have a few apartments posted in there, along with cars, boats, etc. It usually takes a few days. You can try a realtor, I know the Real Estate Center has some rentals, I'm sure the others do too. They aren't usually the cheapest. Good Luck.

Island Paul,

Remember the 3 bedroom on Berry Hill (right up from Bryan's) that I called about? They finally called back last night. The place sounded great. 3 br, 2 baths, new applicances including dishwasher and satelite TV, but they had one stipulation.... no kids. That bytes! If I don't find something soon in the next few weeks, I'll have Teresa and the kids in the studio apt with me! I have put an ad in the paper under "Wanted to Rent". The ad should have started by yesterday, but it did not. Hopefully it will start tomorrow.

No kids??? What kind of stipulation is that?!

I hope you find something soon! I'm sure by the time I get down there in July, everything will be gone! I can't imagine sharing a studio with my husband and our daughter. We're so used to our three bedroom apartment! I told him we may have trouble getting a place initially but hopefully we'll only have to move once (from a short term to a long term) once.

Chris,
No kids is not the truth!

Remember when I asked the young thing showing us the place about the neighbors? She said there was a lady and her CHILD living next door to the one you looked at!!!!!

I'd call back and go see the guy you talked to instead of the child!

Paul,

You're thinking of the wrong place. The one on Winterg that you took the pics had no problem with children. After talking it over with Teresa, we decided that the pool w/o a fence would be too much of a risk (especially since the pool is currently drained). The place that did not allow kids was close to Hull Bay on Berry hill (right up from Bryan's Bar).

Chris

P.S. - Cool updates on the web site!

Rachel,

Will you be looking for a 3 br also? Which part of the Island are you wanting to live? I'd be more that happy to post my findings. I've looked at several apartments this past week and they're all very, very different.

Best of luck to you also.

Chris

Rachel:

I have been reading the previous threads about the housing situtation ect....
Just wondering the stuff you are seeing....What was the cheapest......APT or Studio you found?

Did you see any that excepted pets?

Last question......What about if you just wanted to rent a room from someone's house........Is there any of that going on?

Thanks
Keith (looking forward to moving to the islands in a few months)

Keith: I'm not on island yet. I'll be there in July. 🙂

Chris: We're probably looking for a 4 bedroom (which seems impossible), 3br minimum. We want to live on the east end but we're flexible. As long as it's a "good" neighborhood. I wish it was possible to find a nice villa to rent without having to spend 10k a month!

One of my mothers best friends owns a house in BVI and offered to rent it to us but I really don't want to get settled into a different island when we want to live in the USVI. When it comes down to it, if by December my husbands immigration visa hasn't come through, it's going to be our only option!

I really appreciate your offer to post your findings. It'll help me a great deal and I'm sure others on the board.

Chris, bummer about the Berry Hill rental not accepting kids. I have friends who live over there and they have awesome views and it is incredibly safe.
Keep looking, I am sure that you can find something if you remain diligent in your search.
Not sure how much you and/or Rachel want to spend on the 3bdrms., but I know people who have called realtors and asked about long-term villa rental.
It is still remarkably expensive (ususally $4000-5000/mo.), but possible.

P.S. Island Paul, even though a lot happens by word of mouth, I think the Island Trader is the best bet at this point. As you noticed, because the island is so spread out and many roads lead to small enclaves, driving around is not really feasible. Good luck!

I don't want to get anyone unduly excited but we may have a 3 bedroom/3bath at Sea Cliff Villas for rent in July. I emphasize "may" as we expect to close on the sale by the end of this month/ beg of July. This would be a year possibly two years unfurnished rental. We would be looking for a family to care for it as we would ourselves. If interested let me know and as things progress I can update you.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind paying 4-5k for the right place. I know it's a lot but if it reduces the stress of living in a place that is way too small or isn't working for us, then it is worth it. I'd love a private beautiful villa with a nice pool (I can dream can't I?!) like you see in all the rental villa advertisements!

The less we have to move, the more likely we'll be successful. When we moved to Hawaii last year, our place that we'd arranged kept getting delayed and delayed until we finally went back home. It wasn't easy to find a place where we wanted to live and we ended up spending about 10k on renting a condo but we never managed to get into our long term rental.

I really want this move to work and my husband doesn't deal with stress very well, that's for sure!

Laurie--Too late, I think everyone got excited. Have you gotten a lot of emails? 🙂

Rachel--One friend I know had a lovely long-term villa rental with a pool (with a waterfall) and a gazillion bedrooms in Peterborg (right on the water). Like I said, try calling a few realtors. You never know what you might find!

Actually no emails so I may just do a separate posting in case it got lost in the shuffle. I have seen your posts , and forgive me if I am remembering incorrectly but - are you an attorney? I ask because I am as well and we will eventually (1-2 years) be moving down and I would appreciate speaking with someone who is currently practicing in STT.

Chris...

My husband and I work at Antilles. We packed up our wonderful rental house a couple weeks ago and put things in storage because we are off-island through the end of July at which point we were scheduled to close on a house we were buying. The deal fell through on Friday, courtesy of an appraiser, and now we are returning to the island, homeless. Three little girls. (Our wonderful rental house got rented - fast.)

Am wondering if you have any leads??? Thanks...bb

Laurie,

"If" this unit comes available, what would be the monthly rent? Teresa and I would be interested in learning more about it.

Thanks!

I saw 'SOME' signs too - but enough to have a selection of places to consider - or rent the first one you find that's somewhere in your budget, needs, etc?

I'm just saying that perhaps there is a business to be had, a very serious business - rental property management, listing service, referral service? Something in that line?

Hey Ronnie,

If you see a sign, let Island Paul or my husband Chris know via email. They have been driving around the island looking for apartments and are not finding something that would work. I do not want to be stuck in a studio apartment with three kids and my husband. 😉 We are hoping for a three bedroom on the North side. He has found a few, but they always have one thing that we can't live with - and we are not that picky! One was the perfect size, perfect price, etc and - oh yeah - no KIDS allowed! Another had stairs that were a potential hazard to small children - really wasn't looking to see the E.R. within the first month. Another was perfect except that the pool was right outside the door from the apartment with no gate or fence - another potential crisis. The really beautiful ones are too expensive. Sigh.... He religiously grabs an Island Trader early Thursday mornings and calls each one that remotely sounds reasonable. We have even looked at two bedrooms - if large enough, we'd even take that.

There are A LOT of places for rent this week in the Island Trader. It's one of the largest listings I've seen.

Matt, I've sent the Island Trader listings to Chris (off island) and Teresa. I agree it was a hopeful sign, with more listings than usual.
