I've noticed many of the houses for sale have fruit trees. Mostly, mango and avacado. What other fruits grow in the VI? Pineapple, papaya, oranges or bananas?

In our yard, we have five banana trees (two of which are currently bearing enormous bunches of green bananas), a plum tree that survived a total uprooting when tropical storm Jeanne hit us last August, which is heavy with small round green plums right now, a small lime bush that gave us two juicy limes last season, and a papaya tree. There is also a passion fruit vine growing near our back fence, where three yards come together. We all share the fruit from that plant.

Other fruits that grow here are the sour sop (the only tree I know of is by the bar that's directly across the street from the Cane Bay Beach). I'm told that sour sop makes a fantastic ice cream flavor and great popsicles. The sweet sop is better known as the sugar apple, there's also star fruit (carambola).

What am I missing, folks?

Click on General Info then Flora & Fauna on the main page. Any tropical or subtropical fruit tree will grow here. Native USVI edible fruit trees include stinking toe (Hymenaea courbaril), sweetpea (Inga fagifolia), mammee-apple (Mammea americana), and sapodilla (Manilkara zapota). Soursop (Annona muricata) might be native. The native passion fruit vine (bell apple) is Passiflora laurifolia. On St. Croix, you’ll find them in the forest and people’s yards.

Hey FOG...

Longtme since I've seen you here -- hope all is well with you.

Our fruit trees are growing nicely so we'll have plums, lime, bananas and passionfruit. I'd like to start an avacado tree, too, which I've been told will do well down here. Would also like to relocate some raspberries down here from the mother of all bushes back in Mighigan -- does anyone have experience or advice for trying to grow raspberries on STX?

All info is greatly appreciated. Many thanks!
