Average Age? What is there to do?

Is the age of St. Thomas and St. John old or young? I'm 36 and a little worried that there will be a bunch of young college kids working and then married folks. Is there after work places to go? Do people island hop on the weekends? I like the beauty of the islands but I'm a social guy and still want to have fun, not sit at home and smoke w#$d. What is the population of the island during season?

hey islandtime!!

don't stress: my hubby and i are 37, so you're not too old to come down and have fun!!! it's not all college kids, as we meet lots of people our age and older. yes, people of all ages go to the bars after work and island hop on the weekends and even during the week!!

not sure what the island's population is during the season. all i know is that downtown is like a mosh pit when the cruise ships come in. cruz bay can get a little hectic, too.

you'll fit in, don't worry!

Dear islandtime,

You should probably forget about anything to do with age.

One of the joys of being here is that the islands are a melting pot non-pareil and the diversity isn't only where age is concerned but encompasses colour, nationality, cultures and a whole lot more.

I came here when I was about your age and, over the years, have definitely become embedded here because of the diversity. I really don't think I would really fit into any sort of "small town" either USA or Europe any more and city life leaves me cold.

There certainly are places to go "after work" and places where you can meet up with interesting people. Seek and ye shall find and, when in Rome, do as the Romans - but choose your Romans well!

Yes, some residents do take off to "island hop", particularly on long holiday weekends but it may not be the island-hopping that you're thinking of. Working people who have either their own boats or access to boats might take off for a few days of relaxation on the water, going to either St. John or to the BVI and holing up at a nice anchorage or mooring for sheer relaxation. Others take the ferry to either St. John or Tortola to do the same. Each to his druthers!

The general population stays pretty constant. The snowbirds come for season and, when they leave, the teachers return to school.

There's pretty much something for everyone here as long as you're open to it all and come with an open and healthy attitude.

Thanks so much. I have a very healthy mind and look forward to my visit in less then two weeks. I just get nervous about an overseas move. I have lived all over the US. Anxiety is a natural feeling.

I know that "resort" locations can be young sometimes and I want to make sure I don't feel "old". Hope to find a few attractive island woman and work hard/play hard for a year or more.

I have a girlfriend that has kids and we have talked marriage. She isn't ready yet and I am a bachelor that has the world by the tail...just want one last hurray or fun travel trip abroad. I looked into Spain, went to New Zealand (to far) and Australia and think with the work situation and visas this is probably a good fit. Does anyone know about Cruz Bay Watersports? This is the type of company I'm looking to work for...any other good suggestions?

Hey Islandtime
I'm a 30 something as well and I've been combining travel and work for quite some time. It's true that a lot of the people I've met while leading the kind of life I lead are generally in their 20s, but there are always those of us "oldersters" who refuse to suppress their wanderlust. I used to worry about the age difference, but I don't any longer. My current roommates are 21 and 24 and from Argentina. They're going home this weekend and I've got an invitation to visit. I've lived and worked all over this country and a few others as well and have always met really interesting people of all ages.
When I started living the life I do, I was in my 20s and watched as friends married and settled down (I have 2 weddings to attend in May or I'd be in STT a lot sooner than June/July). Now some of these friends are on marriage number 2 or settled with mortgages and kids and careers. I respect the choices they've made, but decided that until I find someone who wants to explore the world with me that I wouldn't settle for settling. Make sense?
When I do make it home for a visit there isn't one person who isn't just a little bit jealous of my life and I've always got plenty of stories to tell.

Thanks for the notes. I guess I get nervous thinking of what I "should" be doing and not really what makes me happy. Like they say you can always go home or stay longer. I just am really looking for a fun experience in life right now and don't want to do the normal thing of corporate latter stuff. I did it and now it doesn't appeal to me. Life is short and I want to enjoy different things. However I also hope to find a partner along the way and was hoping it would be more than 21 year olds having keg partys on off days!

However, Islandtime, one caveat...don't set your heart on finding a woman in your age group, of the same ethinicity, has the same mindset, shares your likes, etc. I say this because, for me (a white, 36 year old male from Michigan), the men to women ration was 7 to 1 when I was single, and probably still is. If you have your mind set on finding a woman of the XYZ race, likes to XYZ, is XYZ old, and shares XYZ, then you are limiting yourself right out of the market. We are such a melting pot here, that age/race barriers don't really exist. Be very open minded in your search and you you will find a match much easier.

Now, if you want to hit on tourists that leave after a week, then you'll be in heaven! Haha! I did that for a while, cuz white women in my age range were hard to come by. But, that does get old pretty quick...after a year or two! haha!

Oh, it sure does! You won't hear any of the women complaining. Just the men! haha! The old adage goes: "You never lose your girlfriend in St. Thomas...you just lose your turn!" Haha!

But I've heard..."for the ladies, the odds are good but the goods are odd!"

Well...once you've had allthose straighlaced, yuppie-types in the States, aren't you loking for something a little 'odd'? My wife was and she got it! Haha!

when you say 7-to-1 ratio, thats not in the total islands population, right? is that just in people that moved there? seems a little odd otherwise?

Islandtime- I think you were reading my mind when you brought this topic up! I'm 30 and moving down in September to STJ. I'm looking to make a life in the islands, not just stay for six months and sleep 5 to a 2 bedroom apartment (which is what a friend of mine did several years ago when she lived there). Age doesn't matter too much to me now, and I'm glad it won't matter much down on STJ. But, also nice to know that there are other people in their 30's. I don't plan on dating 21 year old college boys (not that there's anything wrong with them, just not my scene).

Amen to that 7-1 ratio!

No, as a whole the population is pretty even. Just the caucasion ratio is way off. 7 men for every one woman.

The odds are good but the goods are odd. Hahahahah. That made my day. I've dealt with odd goods before and am looking forward to seeing if they just get odder the farther south you are. Thanks for the chuckle!
