Hi All! I am a new poster, and we just found out that DH will soon be employed with HOVENSA and will be leaving to go down in 2 weeks. My son and I will join him sometimes in August. I have really enjoyed this message board as we anticipated the move. It covers so many things! I am looking forward to getting more involved with it. My question is: How common are garage or yard sales there? We will be down sizing quite a bit, and I can't decide whether to have a garage sale here or just wait until I get there. I will have a lot of things to sell - any thoughts? Denise

Hello,

Honestly that is a tough call. You can ship boxes of stuff, but if you want to bring anything big - you need a crate - and if you have a crate you might as well bring it all to fill it... If you don't bring anything then you only have what is available on island. I am on STT and the garage sales have not been what I wanted. We just wanted a couch - had a futon which became uncomfortable. Anyway, after a month of searching, we found a good deal on a new couch. If you want to buy cheap - we found our choices to be wicker or futons for living room furniture. Everything else was in the thousands. I will say that we were being somewhat picky. We have lived here a year and still have patio furniture for a kitchen table. 🙂

That being said, I still got rid of a lot before moving by selling, giving away, and storing at family's homes. We still came with too much stuff and not what we really needed. It all depends on your situation. There are a lot of furnished apartments to rent, or you could shop garage sales and such and do okay for furnishings. It depends on how picky you are I guess.

There have been some people who completely sold everything in the States. One family posted that they were disappointed that the money they made from the sale wasn't enough to buy necessary furniture here.

My husband moved here first as well. I used him to 'feel out' the situation and see what would work for us. I had a baby crib and such that I didn't want to sell, so we ended up bringing almost all our furniture except for our nice antiques and just supplementing what we needed on island. There are some rent to own stores here, so that could be an option if you don't have the cash to spend on big items.

Anyway, I hope that helps and doesn't confuse. It just all depends on your own taste and what you can settle for as far as furnishings and if you hit the right garage sale or not. There are many advertised lately, so they do have them here. Good luck with your move.

If Hovensa is paying for your moving costs, then you might consider bringing everything you think you might need and maybe some other stuff that might be sold.

If you are paying your own shipping costs you might consider selling the heavier, larger stuff in the states.

Cars should be brought if the shipping is paid, but if not, you might consider selling and buying here.

Hello,

If you can do some down sizing back home then do it there. Garage sales happen here but... you'll have enough on your plate with moving, settling in to not have to worry about organizing and advertising a yard sale. At least that's my opinion. Also if you are paying for the shipping then it might make "Cents" to get rid of the extra stuff rather than paying to ship it.
