Good evening! I have a chance to move to STX and rent a room with a disabled person at mutual homes in grove place for $300/mnth including utilities. Whats that area like? Is it dangerous or just "ghetto" so to speak? ( i ask since i googled it and found out it was section 8.) I used to live on Hawaii, now returning home on mainland for awhile, but i miss the island life, i am considering this because itd be much closer to family (all on east coast) when i want to fly back for visits, and cheaper then Oahu given the rent (foods about same islandwise) I have 6grand saved and can find work easy as i have a background in customer service, caregiving, and commercial driving. So, what do you think?

Ps. I am a 31yr old white male, i had no racial issues on hawaii because i embraced the culture and people and made friends fast 🙂

Aloha, or, good day! 😉

My 2 cents is that moving to that area is not a good idea.

Check out Caribbean breeze apartments. They might have something for you to get started.

Mutual Homes is a section 8 community.

Not sure you can "legally" rent a room there. If the potential landlord was caught, the rental income probably would not allow him/her to qualify for section 8 based on the income you provide from the rental.

Yes, I know there is slim to none chance of the landlord being caught, but still you have to wonder about this offer.

Desire to culturally assimilate aside, my thought is you would be setting yourself up for a difficult experience that may chase you off the island when, otherwise, STX might be the right place for you.

I frequently read about crime and shootings in and around grove and mutual homes.

The first question that popped in my head is, "how did you come about finding this roommate situation?"
