So, a little bird (Hi LJ!) told me St. Croix has been graced with a new Chinese Rest. called Golden Wok.

I will be back on STX shortly so, please give me your reviews/thoughts...

Also, feel free to describe in detail the tasty asian morsels you love (if any).

Thanks!

We went there on opening day, and except for a few minor things, we liked it alot. I have heard from quite a few people, though, who went the following week and thereafter were very disappointed. A friend told me they ordered a Lo Mein item and instead of the normal noodles, they had angel hair pasta. The waitress doesn't know the difference between white zin, pinot, etc. which is from my experience as well as my friends. My friend ordered General Tso's and it was so hard he could barely cut it. The service is a bit slow and inattentive. But like I said, I did enjoy OUR food on the opening night so I'm not sure why so many people were disappointed later on.

The dining room has little or no ambiance. The tables are lined up institution style. There is one hugh electronically lit picture on the end wall, again institutional, and no other art. The bar is ridiculously high. A normal person sitting at the bar would have their drink at about chin level. Our food was on the low end of mediocre. Our waitress was very nice, but not particularly knowledgeable. The drinks were priced too high for the atmosphere. Overall, I'd give it about a 2 or 3. We will probably go back some day, but we will need to "forget" before we do.

Well, I liked it. Food was good, dining room looked like every other Chinese restaurant I've ever been in, clean and functional. I had the pepper steak, egg drop soup and egg rolls. Pepper steak was tender and tasty, as were the eggrolls. Soup had a little too much cornstarch for me - too thick. Real chinese tea. Ric had the sweet and sour pork. Dinner for 2 was $30

But they have take out and are on my way home from work, so I will be partonizing the Golden Wok.

I think Chinese food is really an individual taste kind of thing. So try it and see if it's your idea of good Chinese food.

Thanks for the responses all.

Decor and service is not an issue for me (well, at least not in this context) and I am so starved for GOOD Chinese food I will probably give it a go.

Thanks again!

we tried the take out their first week open and it wasn't too bad. Not amazing, but edible. They forgot to put our egg rolls in the bag, though, and I didn't find that out until we had gotten home. Haven't been back since, but will probably stop in for take out on occasion.

The only decent chinese food on island. I'm really surprised at the mediocre reviews....thats as good as any average stateside restaurant which is a huge step up for chinese food on the island. Sure it may not have much decorator appeal but i cant really think of many back home that do either. Now if we could just get one decent Mexican restaurant life would be good.

By and by the place where the mix used to be has reopened as Angry Nates (there bar menu is better then there regular menu so ask for it if you dont sit at the bar)...and old Giovanni's is about to reopen as something new as well (about two more weeks).

yes - lots of new restaurants are opening just in time for the winter season. "Pickled Greek" should also open soon. I hope some of them make it work and stay open when the snow birds leave in late spring.

I've had pretty good Chinese food a couple times from the restaurant right at 5-Corners, but I don't tend to think to stop in there. China Jade at Sunny Isle is reliable in quality and gives you a lot of food for your $$. They are also the only "fast food" on the island that lives up to being fast.

A Mexican restaurant or a Thai restaurant would be wonderful!

Hello all,

I really like the food. Nothing like stateside Chinese, but pretty darn close. It's the best I've had on the island. And the service is great!

And best of all, they don't use those salad shrimp like some other restaurants do, but REAL shrimp that you can actually taste.

I have been back several times, and plan to keep going!!!!!!

I've been enjoying Golden Wok in Golden Rock since they opened. Service is fast and friendly. Food comes out piping hot and the veggies seem very fresh. I especially like the chicken in garlic sauce. Yum! The other day I stopped in for lunch and ordered hot and sour soup. There was a strip of plastic in it like the tear strip from a pack of cigs. I quietly pointed it out to my waitstaff and she came back from the kitchen and said "the cook said he's sorry". After paying my bill ($15 for lunch) I went to speak to the owners and the response I recieved was disappointing. " I told the chef to be more careful but sometimes this can happen." He didn't even apologize! And his wife ducked around the corner and was peeking around. Very strange. I understand that this can and will happen but I didn't appreciate the response I received and left feeling like they didn't give a damn. I'll probably go back some day but no time soon. The words "We're very sorry" would have gone a long way and I let them know it. Still no apology!! Just a blank stare.
