Hey folks,

The wife and I flying down for our first fact finding mission in prparation to opening our business. We are staying at Maho Bay and was wondering if there is a grocery store close to the ferry docks at Red Hook. Also would it be cheaper to take the ferry from Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay and cut out some of the cost of a taxi all the way to Red Hook.

Thanks in Advance

Yes, Marina Market is right across the street from the ferry dock in Red Hook.

Hi clipper,
Regarding Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook, taxi verses ferry, it really is 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. The ferry is more and the taxi is less.... or the ferry is less and the taxi is more. The ferry leaves every hour from Red Hook, much less often from Charlotte Amalie. The time of day can make a difference. The time of year can matter too. The Charlotte Amalie ferry cuts its runs in summer.

Traffic from the airport to Red Hook can cause a problem. Another thought is whether you prefer a longer boat ride of a bit of an inner-island tour of St. Thomas. Taxis on St Thomas are special. You don't get your own taxi to take you to your destination on a direct route. So, even though it should be half an hour to 45 minutes from airport to ferry dock in Red Hook, it can be much longer. Airport to ferry dock in Charlotte Amalie, you will be the first stop, so much quicker, but you only see a mile of St. Thomas. Also, you are then committed to grocery shopping on St. John. There is a Pueblo market between the airport and Charlotte Amalie ferry, but you then need to deal with your own taxi. (You need to leave your luggage somewhere while you shop.)

There are grocery stores in Cruz Bay. If you are arriving a bit later in the day, it might be a good idea to stop in Red Hook. Bring a "cold bag" or pick up a Styrofoam cooler at the market. As you are nearing Red Hook, there is Food Center, a more traditional grocery store, with a good selection, however, it you are meat eater and appreciate fresh produce, I recommend Marina Market. Smaller produce section and very expensive, but Food Center is expensive too, and not as fresh. I would only buy meat at Marina Market. They have a nice deli (closes early) and a nice meat counter with a good variety of seafood as well.

Maho does have a convenience store, but it is very expensive and closes really early. The restaurant at Maho is not expensive, but also, not inspired, and also early hours.

Back to the ferry....they will ask for photo ID, and be aware they charge for luggage.

Have a great time. I hope all goes well with your business venture.

I live on STJ and have never been asked for photo ID to take the ferry back and forth to STT.

piaa,

Actually, they will ask for photo ID is not correct. They CAN require is more accurate. Do you remember a couple of years ago when there was a serious altercation at the Red Hook dock, including gun fire, over a photo ID issue?

Either way, clipper, et al, will have ID, since they just got off a plane.
