Handlers for cars

Hi everybody!

I've been trying to search the message board for car handlers (someone to take care of permits, ect. and deliver the car to STJ) and I was wondering if anyone could give me any names or numbers of someone who would do this. I know someone mentioned Lee at managedfreight, but coming from Cali that would cost about $5,000 each for 2 cars ! Yikes! Is there any one who would do it independantly? Maybe someone living on STT who does this?

All info is greatly appreciated,
Thank you!

Jen:)

Maybe you misundertood what he was telling you. A ball park number for getting a car from Fla and on the road in the VI is $2K each. More depending on the size, value and country of manufacture. From Calif it will be even more as you have to have your car shipped to a port in Fla.

Hello Jen,

That price sounds like it includes shipping to the east coast, the cargo barge shipping to the VI, taxes and fees and not just taking care of the permits/inspection.

Are you planning to organize the shipping yourself now and just want someone to do the registration on island?

If you are on a budget you can do the registration part yourself, just takes a bit of patience :).

What about selling them and buying on island?

Thank you for your response Islander!

Yes, the price I was told by Managedfrieght was for land shipping from Cali to Florida, then across the ocean to St. Thomas. Not including permits and such.

I am planning on organizing the shipping myself(with a different company than Managedfrieght) and am still waiting to hear back on pricing and the possibility of the company to get the permits and stuff(handler). If no one from the company can do permits, and bring the car to St. John, then yes, i will be looking for someone to just pick up the car, register, get permits and (hopefully) bring it to us on St. John. Its just one less stressor for me to worry about.

Im not too worried about price for someone else doing the registration (Ive heard around $100-$200?). I think it would be worth avoiding the hassle. But if worse comes to worse I can do it myself (its just a way bigger pain in the butt!)

We thought about selling our cars, but i just got a new one that i dont want to let go of, and our other one is a great island car that we can use while we're there, then sell when we leave probably.

Thank you!

Hello Jen,

Yes the price you heard ($100-$200) is correct.

Jen, I thought I understood from Lee with Managed Freight that he DOES have someone on island to get all of that done...you might contact him again and see if it is a company you can call directly, or if they subcontract through Lee. We are going to STX in a month (yikes!) and he assured me he could have everything done and the car brought to us. Even though I've been a royal pain in the wazoo, Lee continues to talk to me - patient man.

We talked to a couple of "international movers" (the big boys) who had no idea what we were talking about and no connections at all.
