Hate VI
So Florida's governor just asked everyone flying into FL from an international destination to self quarantine for 14 days.
If there is a fire in a crowded building I hope someone yells fire LOL.
The Spanish flu H1N1 in 1918 originated at Fort Riley, Kansas so many historians think. It spread in close quarters among soldiers in WW1 who were in containment areas in Spain. They took it to their homes across the world with them.
The media is doing their job. This is not a political story though some want to believe it is - and I don't think the media are fanning that flame (back to fire) more than warranted. I actually keep wanting more substantial news but I don't think the information is quickly forthcoming.
On the other hand they also could be reporting more on today's stock market adjustment and the meaning of that Saudi Arabian globe.
Today's news out of China was there have now been 2 days with no new cases of COVID-19 outside Hubei Province, the government is now saying it expects that Hubei Province, not counting Wuhan City, will be in a similar status by the end of March and that Wuhan City will be at a similar status by the end of April. If they are anywhere close to being accurate this is huge progress.
Total deaths in China as of today for COVIS-19 are 3,120. The Spanish Flu, one of the deadliest pandemics in history was an H1N1 virus type similar to the swine flu pandemic of 2009. The 2009 swine flu pandemic killed many more people than the COVID-19, it is estimated that between 150,000 and 575,000 deaths resulted from the 2009 swine flu.
The response time to COVID-19 has been much quicker than for the 2009 swine flu and the protocols are improved. Again, education is key to avoidance/prevention as well as personal discipline to put the advice/protocols into practice. The advice I've seen for elderly, with other health issues, is stay at home (avoid unnecessary contact with strangers) until the situation is under control.
Experts also agree that the numbers of reported cases of COVID-19 is likely significantly underreported, for the lack of testing facilities, so the mortality rate is therefore most likely overstated versus the current 3% to 3.5% estimates. I heard of one estimate that puts the mortality rate at below 1%, not good but better than what's currently being reported.
Again, I am in no way down-playing the Coronavirus and it risks as a pandemic nor the aggressive steps needed to keep it under control until a vaccine can be made widely available. My only point is let's look at the data and try and keep things in perspective, while we work the issue. Our biggest concerns should be the nations, like Iran, that seem ill equipped to deal with a pandemic, which will unfortunately lead to a lot of unnecessary loss of life.
I have to admit I like St Thomas so much more with cruise ships gone and tourists back in the mainland. The island got quite sleepy, no traffic, no hustle, no drunk and shirtless, tattooed fatties hanging around downtown. Magens access is uncrowded and free.
The island seems cleaner too. Love it.
Makes you wish they had initiated a land and water use plan years ago and didn't fall for the "cruise ships will make you rich" ploy, eh??
Also, posts from early March look so...strange?... Like from another universe.
The first reported case in the VI was on March 14. Will life ever return to normal?
@STTsailor Kind of like St Croix is normally. Except the drunk fat guys, Me and my friends are still here. 🙂
Life is too short to be unhappy, so move to some place you like better. You shouldn't post negative comments to this forum and sour the experience for those who are thinking of moving here.
@east-ender I lived in St. Thomas in 2002 and left in less than 12 months because my job transferred me up to Alaska (which was also an incredible experience). However, I have been dreaming of moving back ever since and haven’t stopped planning for it even if won’t be anytime soon I absolutely love the USVI. I want to move to STX since my closest friend I had in STT moved to STX 15 years ago and visited there and love it even more than I could have imagined! The diving there is just amazing and just hope with my careful financial planning for early retirement (??????) pans out for me personally. I have been very disciplined and goal oriented so~finger crossed tightly!!!!
Little Miss: If you have lived in the VI, you have some sense of how you fit in. I wish you good luck with your plans. One thought, though... St Thomas in 2002 was in the heights of the EDC boom. Money was being thrown around left and right. The really rich guys were buying up property for their chefs and boat captains. Restaurants were top shelf. Life was good. Well, unless you were out one of the nights that Gary Mole went crazy and broke up a bar. (Wow! I hadn't thought about him in donkey years!) The financial situation in the VI is different now.
I just looked up Gary Mole and maybe he was around a little later than 2002, but still...

I totally disagree, it's good to get the opinions, good or bad. It's not all paradise here and people need to know that. Being honest can save someone heartache and lost of dollars...
@lyubov your an idiot, this site is for the good and bad, sorry if I hurt your snowflake feelings, i love it here but it's not for everyone and especially if you think this is paradise, it's got many opportunities and one needs to be aware. But troll on ???
Everyone post only positive vibes, nothing to see here, move along lyubov has spoken
- You sound like the snowflake with all your crying about how much you hate it there. And yet, I'm sure you remain. You call me and idiot, yet you obviously don't know the difference between "your" and "you're." Now move your miserable little bitch ass along.
That's right, I have spoken. Hear me roar.
@lyubov oh the grammar police ???
Let's see in the past week,
The governor gave his daughter 1m no bid contract
His buddy gets 217k for writing checks =1300 per check
Murders are happening weekly
Crime at an all time high
But let's only post the fairy tale that lyubov wants you to hear ???
I'm sorry you don't understand what this site is for, it's to tell the honest truth. And honestly your not from here as the locals really don't want mainlanders moving here.
today is beautiful, beach is great and I love the island even with all that ?

It is so refreshing to hear that officials can come and go but the way they are sharing the spoils of election with the family and friends stays the same in VI.
Out tax dollars so well spent.

Uh, who do you think you are telling people what they should or shouldn't post? As long as it follows the site guidelines, people have every right to post whatever they wish, even if it's negative.
I've been here a lot longer than you, and, sometimes, there are indeed negative realities of island living. Not telling the truth does a disservice to everyone. If you don't like a negative comment, then scroll past it. It ain't rocket science.
Also: welcome to the internet.
- Better idea: When you see my posts, keep scrolling. Stop wasting your time trying to get a reaction out of me that you never will. Who do you think you are confronting me? Anyway, I'll be down there in a few months whether you want me to be or not. See you on the other side!
Personally, I’m turning 64 in a couple of weeks and none of my blood relatives has made it much past 90 so best case I’ve got about 20 to 25 years left on my all too short ride through life. I’ve learned I like islands, warm weather, real people, I don’t like crowds, resort style living or ostentatious displays of wealth. And yes, I prefer to be in the USA as I’m a patriot who has traveled extensively, so I’ve already seen the world, I have a large shipping container full of post cards and tee shirts. I also agree STX has some serious problems that must be exposed to the light of day, but I’m not sure I can actually change any of that mess, so the best I can do is take common sense precautions and find joy in what I can do. To me STX is a special place, in part because of natural beauty, it’s friendly people but also in part because I want it to be a special place, which I think is a big piece of the happiness puzzle. Life is short, enjoy the ride.
Lyubov: You lived on St Thomas in the past so surely you remember that people you offend today will inevitably cross your path tomorrow. I wish you luck on your redux visit. ?
I think it was a Hollywood scenario when it was 1st mentioned --
