Hi,
I'm moving to the islands next week and was wondering if I can get a health card in the US or if I have to wait until I'm in St. Thomas. Also, will a verizon cell phone work in St. Thomas? I don't think it will, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks so much. Take care.

Hello Suzanna,

You have to get the health card here, on island.

Info. on Health Card.

People who plan to work in food/drink service need health cards. Health cards are issued at the Community Health Clinic. On St. Thomas the clinic is located in the Roy Schneider Hospital, second floor. The office is open from 1pm-3pm. For more information call the Clinic at (340)774-7477.

The cost is around $46 for everything ($30 for the Health Card; and the stool test from a lab will likely run around $16).

Requirements that you have to bring with you to the Health Clinic are a photo ID, picture, a social security card and results of the stool test. I suppose you could do the test back home at your doctor's office and bring the results with you; get that out of the way. Applying for the card has to be done here on island.

Verizon is not a carrier here but works for some (off of another carriers network) and not for others and for those it works for sometimes they report roaming charges and others report none.

Verizon works but you will pay for it. Cancel it as soon as possible. When I was doing my premove visit it didn't say roaming on the phone, and I barely used it. I got my bill and it was something like $80 higher than normal. I called them and played dumb, which is easy for me, and said its US Virigin Islands and I have a nationwide plan. They credited me the money because I was polite and I had been a loyal customer, but I wouldn't recommend taking that chance.

Get a Cingular phone down here. I did a test with them and Sprint and Cingular had the best coverage, but it also depends on where you will be living.
