Heart worm medication

Hello everyone,

I'm moving to St. Thomas or Water Island in November. My dog is making the move with me and I would like to medicate her against all the possible parasites/diseases that she could become infected with in the tropical climate. I am not familiar with all the parasites/diseases in that climate because I'm from Alaska. If any of you could recommend me to a good brand or treatment against heart worm, tick and flea, and/or any other things I should worry about in the area I would sincerely appreciate it.

Cheers!

Probably it would be better to make an appointment with a local vet after you arrive. He/she can check out your pooch and make appropriate recommendations.

You do need to watch out for fleas and ticks, not sure how big of a prob it is in Alaska. If you want to stock up before you come, I like Interceptor brand for the monthly heart worm pills. On St Croix, there is an occasional poisonous toad that comes around, and the creepy crawly centipede, if your dog likes to attack critters. Just have good screens! My friend had his dog's face swell a little bit from a bite from something, and was told by the vet to give him a little bit of Benedryl.

Yes she does like to chase spiders and bugs (none are poisenous here). So I'm concerned about her messing with the poisenous varieties on the islands. I was hoping to get her on some preventative medication before moving to St. Thomas and possibly stocking up before going there. I've heard it can be fairly expensive once on the island.

Thanks

You would still need a prescription from the vet for the heartworm meds though.

Thanks so much for all the helpful information. Which medication do you use? Heartgard Plus chewable tablets seem good.
