Good Luck. This is not something I would attempt with children. And, in our experience $3,000 is cutting it VERY close.

Give us a call when you get here, we'll buy you a drink.

Ric,

thanks for the warning. i was pleased to hear that 3 grand is cutting it close. i was worried that it would be impossibly off. plus, i might have closer to 4 grand if that helps.

not worried about the kids. they are 5 and 7 and are already experienced movers and travellers. i have a degree and 12 years business experience and my wife is an experienced teacher, so we are hoping the island has room for us.

did have a couple questions:

1. anybody know any texas a&m grads down there?

2. is there a musical equipment store. specifically needing drum heads, cymbals, sticks and whatnot?

can't wait to have that drink with you, i'll even buy the second round!

again, thanks to all.

see ya soon,

jarred

Sounds like a plan to me. So many people just can't take that first step. I met a lady from Texas on STX who was the principal at the school of Good Hope. She and her Husband had the Dive shop next to the ship dock on West end. Good luck, keep us posted, you'll do fine. Norman

thanks marty and norman for your input. i'm glad i can get percussion supplies on island, although my wife would probably enjoy some silence every now and then.

your optimism, norman, was particularly welcomed. i am coming regardless and the more good vibes i can get- the better. hope i run into you once i'm there!

as i am learning, every response brings up more questions. here are my new ones:

1. i'm not bringing a car and it seems from the chats that most people think one is needed. if i am a little on the adventerous side, can i make it with a scooter/motorcycle? if so, can they be purchased on island? also, can i get a beater car for a really cheap price? i mean basic transportation.

2. when my wife and kids come and have our needed possessions shipped, what happens when the cargo container gets there? can it be transported to my residence or am i responsible for getting it from the dock to my house?

thanks so much to all for the help. counting the days!!!

soon in st. croix,

jarred

A car is definitely needed, as STX is 80 sq. mi. and paying for taxis or buses can get pricey and it's a pain to not have the freedom to come and go at will. A motorcycle or scooter will do just fine. I ride my Harley everyday. Even if it rains, it's only for 20 minutes or so...just wait a few and the sun will be back out. You should be able to fine a bike in a few days time. A beater will be around $1,000 (vs. $100 back home), and they are plentiful.

Not sure about the shipping question. Anyone?
