I have heard it is dangerous to travel by bike due to narrow roads but are there trails for hiking and biking? I will be housesitting for 5 weeks and am wondering if any point if bringing my mountain bike? Any info much appreciated.

jen,

to be perfectly honest with you, i wouldn't recommend biking anywhere, esp. on STJ and STT. there are hiking trails, but i've never seen bikers on them. i don't know of any trails specifically for bikes.

there is good reason for this: the roads there are very steeply graded and full of hairpin turns. so safety is a major factor.

maybe you can get lucky and find a safe, flat stretch of land on which to bike, but i think your best bet would be to leave your bike in the states.

Hey Jen

You didn't say if you were coming to St Thomas or St Croix. If you are on St Thomas or St John, you will find the bike riding is steep and sometimes narrow and intimidating. On St Croix you have a better chance of not being "picked off" by careless drivers. On St Croix you can even do road riding with some interesting (the beast) climbs.

However if you are looking for casual no stress riding... the USVI would not be your first choice.

One thing about biking on trails- it is forbidden in the National Park on St John, the only place that has hiking trails. The problem is erosion- the earth goes into the sea! Virgin Islanders are not into sharing the road. In fact, they are more into driving by intimidation. Get a nice sturdy car with lots of steel to protect you!
