Home Business Rules...?

What are the rules governing business conducted from your home? For example: Can I get a business license listing my home as my place of business? If I repair small engines, for example, can I do it in my garage? I have run an incorporated consulting firm from my house for many years and wish to continue doing so after I move there (37 days and counting). If this is ok, can you also make a deduction for a portion of your home expenses as a business expense?

Call the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs at (STT) 340-774-3130 or (STX) 340-773-2666. For questions about income tax deductions, the USVI IRB mirrors the stateside IRS so the same rules apply. Cheers!

The Chamber of Commmerce might also be of help. When I send them an e-mail I got tons of information in the mail. I would be surprised unless you have a walk in business that you would have any problems. The only issue I would see is with disgarding old oil. A consulting business depends if you consult at your home in person. That might be considered a walk in business. That also than would be under zoning. Even if you can get a business license you might still not be allowed due to the zoning of your propperty.

So as long as it wasn't a walk-in situation (by appointment only, say) then the license would be issued and zoning wouldn't care. Less than 5% of my current business is with clients at my house. Normally to pick up completed items. I usually pick up and deliver, but on occasion, they stop by. Other than that, I go to them, but I need the ability to have a business phone so I can be listed in the book.
