Good Morning! Well it's morning here in AZ anyway.
I have an opportunity to buy an apartment house in Anna's Retreat. The problem is I'm not real familiar with the area. We plan on doing some serious make-over work to the apartments. Is this an area that any of you would want to rent in? Also we would live in the upper part of the house for probably the first six months. We have two children ages 5 and 8. Is this an okay area for them? Lastly, there are two 2 bed/ 1 bath and one studio apartments; providing we fixed them up really well what kind of rent could we expect to get out of them based on the area and what other places are going for in said area?
Thanks for all your help. Also thanks to everyone for keeping me sane during work. Whenever I'm feeling down at my job and missing the islands I come to this board and it gets me through another day. Only 363 more days till our move! Might I also add congrats to Linda From Michigan and Alix you crack me up! Eek-a-beek! What's that! I look forward to meeting all of you. I'm hopefully going to be down for a very short (3 days) visit to look at this property in about a month. I know Linda is on STX but I'd like to meet those of you on STT. I'd really like to meet with Teresa in that we have similar situations with same age kids and such.
I've rambled enough.

Thank You,
Kelly

PS - It's going to be 112+ degrees today - That Sucks!

We're in way north east phoenix. But we should still get together some time. Commiserate together on how bad the heat here sucks! I've lived here nearly my entire life and I'm still not ok with summers!

Stay cool (literally),
Kelly

Kelly, We have been here over ten years (which in Terry's book makes us 'snowbirds." 🙂 Would highly recommend meeting Terry and Annie as they are not only really cool people, but well travelled and knowledgable as well. We drooled over their pictures from the islands, but we also learned a lot of really great information.

Thanks!, I would love to get together with them and you. We could start an islanders club in the desert. I've been here 28 years, do you think I'd still be considered a snowbird?
Fortunately for me my wife is also very knowledgable about STT. She is a native! Her mother and several in-laws still live there. However, its been nearly twenty years since she has lived there, hence the post about Anna's retreat. Her mother has given us info about the area, but we wanted to get some other perspectives about it.
We really should set something up. My best buddy owns a cool little pub in South Scottsdale, kinda a half way point between all of us. PM me if you'd like to set something up.
And if anybody has some answers to my above post I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks to everybody!

Kelly

It's rather hard to answer your question about Anna's Retreat in general terms. I lived in an apartment at Anna's Retreat for several months a couple of years ago and I was very happy there. It was very quiet, the neighboring tenants were all hard-working professionals and it was, I suppose, what one would describe as a rather "serene" place even though it was right off a major highway.

As far as rental prices, I would guesstimate that a 2 bed 1 bath could probably garner anywhere from 7-900/month and a studio from 6-800. But it's all relative depending on the actual location of the property and what you would offer. If electricity and water are included, if laundry service is available, if there's any kind of a view, if there's a pool, if there's ample parking, if it's furnished or unfurnished and to what extent...the list is endless.

You need to visit before committing yourself so you can see for yourself exactly where the property is located and get a feel for the area, Maybe I've misread your post but if your wife hasn't been home in 20 years and her Mum is still here, then get on with a visit which is way overdue!!!! Cheers.

STT Resident,
Thanks for the info. We've been back several times, she just hasn't lived there for the last twenty years. We actually have come and visited you on a couple of occasions. The first time I was with my very large friend who owns a pub in Scottsdale and then my wife and I have come in a couple of times. You might remember us, we're a mixed couple. You actually even threw darts with us.
For those of you on island who have never been to the Toad And Tart, she makes the absolute best prime rib. If you haven't been, GO NOW, I mean it. Get in your car and go right now! If she isn't open sit outside and wait till she comes in - it's that good!
Thanks again for the info.

Hey Islander@heart,
I lived 10 years in Scottsdale/North Phoenix near 56th and Shea Blvd. I can tell you this, I enjoy the island heat much better than the summers in AZ. Although AZ is great most of the year, carrying oven mitts to open your car doors gets to be a little much after a while. The summer heat is so oppressive, I tell friends that if it ever lasted much past August, you would hear about a rash of axe murders because it fried everyones brain there. Come on down before your brain damage is permanent! LOL

Annas Retreat has alot of amanities close by, but STT Resident is right, it is hard to generalize. You may want to have a good realtor help determine a value and potential rentals by taking a look at the property, even before you come down. Let me know if you need some names.

And thanks for the info for Toad & Tart... I've passed it several times. Now I can stop by for a spike STT Resident!

Island Ed,
Thanks for the info. I grew up about a half mile from where you lived here in Phoenix. As far as getting out before the brain damage takes hold, I think its too late for that! This weeks forecast: 112, 111, 111, 112, 110. I'm Meeeeltingggg!
If I read your post on another thread right your a mortgage lender? If so I'd like to meet with you when I get on island. I'd like to meet with you anyway; cool down with a couple of bushwackers!
I here my boss coming down the hall, gotta go!

Hey Kelly,
Too stinking hot for me! I was there when it got to 122 and my a/c went out on my way back from Tucson... I had to drive with my heat on to keep the car from overheating. What misery! Yeah, come see me when you get here. I'll PM you with details, and I will be glad to help.
We're having a STT get together tonight, so I'll have a bushwacker for you there!
See ya,
