Does anyone know approximently what I would have to pay for car insurance and homeowners insurance on St Croix? I heard it is very expensive. Is there a wind insurance that is needed also? Thanks
Betty

You have to get hurricane insurance. For a 3 bed,2 bath home with one apartment we pay $3500/year. This is through AARP so a bit cheaper than others. Car insurance is not too bad - about $900/year for a new car with comprehensive coverage.

less than $300 /yr for car insurance with only basic liability [which is all that's required]
you dont have to get hurricane insurance unless you have a mortgage; the bank requires that their 'investment' is protected, but some homeowners [who own their houses outright] choose to self-insure; essentially put the cash they would be paying to an insurance company into an account of their own, let it grow, and [if youre the gambling type] after a number of years of good luck, you have beat the system; you have a self-sustaining hurricane fund which should, without any deductible, cover repair costs if you lose a roof or windows, etc. self-insurance is definitely for the gambling type, and you have to be very diligent in leaving the money where it is, the new-car fund has to be separate regardless of how attractive $30k cash looks, it's there for a reason.
enjoy

I live in NJ and my home insurance on a 300,000 home full coverage is about $610.00 Who would even consider an area with $4000.00 policies? Someone is getting rich quick there.Donna wrote:

Who would even consider?

Someone who wants to live in an area that is much more prone to hurricane damage than in NJ, perhaps?

Chris
