I am in my final semester at Saint Louis University and I am considering moving down to St. Thomas or St. John. I have been looking through this forum a lot lately and have found some good info. but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for basic jobs and decently priced apts. for someone who has just graduated from college. I have my degree in secondary education and history and one day hope to teach down there. I am planning on going down the first week of May to find a job and a place to live. Any suggestions will help.

Thanks

LoL love the name,

I am absolutely of no help to you, as I'm moving to St. John myself in May.

but I would like to say Hi 🙂 and you can look through the job postings on the UVI website.

Good Luck and Happy graduation!
(Man I can't wait to walk across the stage!)

Before you head down, you may want to find out the process to become a licensed teacher if you plan on teaching. I assume you will want to start teaching at the beginning of the next school year?

STJ is not particularly affordable for the average recent college grad. Even if the housing was affordable, figure in the cost of commuting to STT. There aren't any high schools on STJ so if you are teaching high school, you'll probably be working on STT. Food will be more expensive on STJ, etc.

The summer is relatively slow for service industry jobs. This isn't meant to discourage your plans, but just to get you thinking.

Check out the Island Trader and look at job vacancies and places to rent. This will give you some idea of what is available and average cost. The Island Trader can be found online through a link on the Virgin Islands Daily News.

Good luck!

PS - You also may want to register so folks can send you a private message rather than post a response.

A quick note to offrdfun73's message: The private school, Gifft Hill School, on St. John is Pre-K to 12th grade. No public high schools.

Are you originally from St Louis? If so you are going to definitely be in for sticker shock. My last apartment in the Lou was $600 a month across highway 40 from Forest Park. My last apartment on St Thomas was $1400 up the hill from Magens Bay. Both 2 bedrooms. The only thing better about my place on St Thomas was the view. But man, what a view!
