The facilities are old and massively underfunded. The salaries for nurses are not competitive with the mainland. But, those who work there seem to do thier best to provide good care.

What might be a good idea to give you a taste is enroll with one of the travel nurse organizations and come here on a 3-6 month contract.

St Croix got rid of all there LPNs and CNAs several months back. People I know that work/worked as RNs either quit right after they reduced staff or are still there but very unhappy. The base salary for BSN nurses is 44,912 which is definitely on the low side and especially for the cost of living. That salary included the 8% reduction he hospital staff was required to take.

If you have experience then I would highly suggest trying it out through a travel nursing company first. You will get paid more through a travel nursing company and housing is included or at least subsidized.
