I am surprised nobody commented here on this topic. Looks like islanders will have to travel to mainland for hip and knee implants.
That is mostly over 65 Medicare crowd. I can't fault the hospital for cutting out loss leader. Is AARP on this yet?

It makes fiscal sense. They'll still perform the necessary emergency surgical procedures but are eliminating the elective. The amount the hospital is reimbursed by Medicare/Medicaid for elective surgery is nowhere near what these procedures actually cost.
