house rental question(s)

Hello, all -

I've been a member for several weeks now and read the posts about every day. My family and I will be moving to STX from Ohio sometime in the next few months and I have a couple of specific rental questions.

Is it possible to rent a nice/luxury 3-4 bedroom, 2-3 bath with a pool that:
A.) doesn't have an apartment attached, or if so, the apartment comes with the house and
B.) allows pets?

My husband was on island over the weekend and found only one with a property manager who was referred to him. We like our privacy (and I'm picky -- I admit it) and really don't want to live that close to another tenant, and we're willing to pay for that privilege. So my question is, are my requests completely out of line for STX, or will we eventually find what we're looking for?

Thank SO MUCH in advance for any comments you may have. The help all of you have provided so far is invaluable!!

It is absolutely possible. If you have the money, you can get that. You'll be looking more in the $2k and up range. $2k will definitely get you a stand alone house, the pool part might or might not be harder to find in that range, it probably won't be furnished. I think you'll end up spending more around $2500 to $3500k, for a nice place with a pool, furnished, in a nice area. Luxury is a bit of a relative term here. We don't keep up with the Jones as much but you will definitely find very nicely styled caribbean homes if you have enough money.

Thanks, Betty! I was hoping that we might have some luck. The one my husband saw was reduced from $3900/mo. to $3000 and still had another tenant and didn't allow pets. We plan to buy, but want to make absolutely sure that we're in the right area before making a huge financial commitment!

I'm a little surprised that your husband was not able to find anything in that price range. I would suggest contacting several different agents. They all seem to have their own exclusive rentals and usually do not share information. Call the real estate companies and the short term rental agents and ask. You will find many of them listed on this website and other similar sites. You can do that easily from the states before you come here again.

There are a lot of houses for sale that might end up in the long term rental pool. Several years ago we found a long term rental by calling six or seven agents just before we arrived. You are doing the right thing by renting first.

Well, Ms. Information I think the problem was that he only gave her about 24 hours notice to find something. My plan is to keep researching it from this end and do like you suggested -- contact potential landlords right before our PMV. I do believe that renting first makes the most sense, just so that we can get a feel for the area and determine where we'll go most often and how long it takes to get there.

Thanks for your optimism!

This site has some nice home rentals: www.stxpm.com, but not many want to rent to pet owners, which they really need to get over, especially in this economy. If they are worried about damages, make sure to get a pet deposit...
