House sitting on St. John's

Hi, I'm new to the boards and posted this inquiry on another message board, but this one seems more appropriate. Is there any other resource for available house sitting positions on St. John or Jost Van Dyke islands besides Caretaker magazine? Does anyone privately know of any openings? Time period is now to Sept. 2006. I'd like to avoid Caretaker's fee of $30.00, if possible. Thank you!

Your answer will be the same over here as well. It's difficult. Word of mouth is the best way and there are plenty of residants already lined up to do such.

BTW. There is no 's' on the end of St. John. That place is in Antigua!

I have to agree with Alexander - if you resent/don't want to pay a meer $30.00 I don't think I want you "house sitting" for me - chances are if you are trying to save $30.00 you are probably not going to take care of my home very well - sorry

the $30 wouldn't really be enough to even run a credit and background check on someone, let alone provide for an administrative person to make phone calls to talk to references. Most people who have $1M+ homes that they would want a housesitter to watch over wouldn't want to do the basic background check and scut work themselves... although they would almost certainly insist on meeting final candidates in person before turning over their home/investment to this stranger. $30 seems a ludicrously small amount for a stranger to pay to have the opportunity to have such a position come their way. Even friends of the owner might expect to pay at least the utility bills and pool service costs to stay in the house without paying a full vacation rental rate.

Personally, I would be in ecstasy to have the chance to "housesit" a villa on another island for a week or two, and thereby get the chance to explore another beautiful piece of this planet.

So if anyone on an island other than STX would be interested in swapping homes for a week at some point, perhaps we can talk! My house isn't a mansion, but it IS a waterfront property in an extremely private location. Another option is that I'm a fairly social person and have an open guest room most of the year... so instead of swapping homes, we could also possibly exchange visits at times when we can show each other the islands we live on.

Just a thought...
