How to get to know fellow islanders?

Good day!

I am shortly going to be starting my PMV in STT. I have been reading this and many other sites, and basically researching this decision more than my S.A.T.'s.

My question is what are some suggestions for making friendly acquaintances with your fellow islanders?

I don't want to make a mistake and just wind up meeting tourist after tourist, but instead really start networking and making friends around the islands.

Suggestions?

Networking is pretty easy when you are here in person. Don't hang out at hotel bars or restaurants, but at more local spots. Strike up a conversation and explain what you are looking for. Do you have an idea of the sort of work you want? If so, go to places that would offer jobs and speak directly to those who work there and those in charge. Take a notebook and write down names and phone numbers. Call people up and thank them. Keep in touch. Call possible landlords and talk with them (even if you aren't moving for awhile.) When you go to banks, stores, etc. explain what you are doing. Ask for opinions and advice - We've all got 'em, y'know! 😉

Definitely local hangouts. Your only problem will be getting us to shut up!

Volunteer! If you're an animal lover, volunteer at the Humane Society. Or give some time at the hospital. Depends on what your interests are. You'll make friends - no worries.

any of the beach bars or boardwalk location on STX is a quick place to meet lots of people. Chat with whomever is sitting next to you and pretty soon you are likely to have met 20 people and have been invited out for a couple outings the next week. Life is social here if you are willing to say Hello.

Since you referred to your S.A.T., I am assuming you are young, possibly just out of high school? A great way to meet local young people would be classes at UVI. No tourists there.

Will you be getting a job? That is the obvious first and best place to meet people.

Join a gym, take up scuba diving (you wind up going on dives with a lot of the same people). Just be yourself and do what you enjoy. Like minded people always seem to find each other.

I only moved to STX a few weeks ago, but I've heard nothing but good things about the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA).

They have a beach clean up this Saturday morning that I am hoping to go to.

It should be a good chance to meet some new people while also doing a bit of good for the island.

Here is the info on the cleanup:

Coastweeks International Coastal Cleanup is a program of The Ocean Conservancy coordinated in the Virgin Islands by UVI Marine Advisory Service. While beaches, bays, estuaries and rivers are being cleaned data is collected to help determine the source of coastal litter so that solutions can be found. We need volunteers with pick-up trucks to haul bagged trash to dumpsters when we’re done. This is fun for the whole family—you’ll be surprised at what you can find on the beach! Please call 773-1989 to register so we can be prepared with adequate supplies and drinks.
