To everybody who is as shattered and devastated by the recent violence in our beautiful Virgin Islands!

Yesterday evening a small group of friends got together and being concerned about the recent violence we spontaneously decided to create a human chain from Christinasted to Frederiksted. Our motto:

“ALL OF WE ARE MORE DEN DEM”

The plan is on Sunday, Aug 9th to start at 2pm in Christiansted at the Government house and in Frederiksted at the Fort. We imagine the chain going from Christiansted along Company Street going towards Pueblo at Golden Rock, from there passing Basin Triangle until La Reine and then connecting along Centerline Road. From Frederiksted going Strand Street then along the street going to the Post office, up the road towards Centerline road. We imagine the human chain to connect at Centerline road at 4pm.

Let’s do it and show our strength that: “ALL OF WE ARE MORE DEN DEM”.

Please join from wherever is the closest point of your home and hold hands.

Let’s create that human chain of peace and love.

I'd rather see a protest to our police or govt officials to let them know how upset we are. Getting that many people together would be better used to try and make a real change.

I was once asked why I don't participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I'll be there.

I'm in no way trying to put down what you are doing. Its a nice thought. But one of the problems here is apathy and sweeping things under the rug. The general population almost never express real outrage. So the greedy politicians have no fear of losing there jobs and the status quo just keeping on going. I'm shattered by the violence but I think we need to do something about it that will get our govt attention.

This is just a way to comfort people. We shouldn't be comforted, we should be outraged that our govt doesn't care about the safety of it's citizens!

Imaceyco,

What a cool idea. I've been wondering how to accomplish the following:
- get attention of the authorities
- let other folks know how many people are serious and united about this
- determine that the authorities have noticed and are doing something.

I had thought about weekly fliers (updated every week) with crime stats. The fliers would get posted in common areas. The fliers would continue to be updated and posted. Once the authorities did something useful, the stats would show it... for everyone to see.

I like your idea better. But, what might also help would be to:
- meet every week, at the same time, in the same place
- the human chain would grow (hopefully) as more and more people heard about it
- the constant weekly meeting (maybe it only takes 15 minutes) would show the people and the authorities that people are united and serious
- maybe incorporate the fliers to show updated crime stats
- and, for those that can't make the meeting.... honk the car horn for 30 seconds on the designated day and time (can you imagine hearing horns throughout the island)

I have no idea about this, but do you need a permit? I'd hate to see it broken up before it gets started because of a technicality.

juanita of course they would try to break it up. cause in a way its protesting the police and the way we feel. knowing our police they would dig out riot gear that i bet they have had just waiting for a reason. I think a protest like some did in front of gov't house regarding WAPA rates. and remember the guy who sat for weeks on the steps of gov't house.

Need people to do that maybe. human chain is great idea but need more drastic measures at this point.

Hmmmm
Could be the only real attention this chain could get, is that between the hours of 2:00PM and 4:00PM on Sunday would be that the house was empty or emptied.

Yes it is still on. Some folks are meeting in F'sted by the clock tower, some in C'sted at Gov't house and Some in front of UVI. I know of a few people along the route who are going to be out on Centerline Rd. I would say to go to one of the endpoints if it is close. I can email you a flier if you pm me with your email address. It would be much appreciated if you could pass it along. Several churches will be announcing it tomorrow and today, as well as fliers being passed through email and hard copy hand to hand. Isle 95 and St Croix Source have gave out the info and tomorrow it should be in the Avis. This is true grassroots at its best. The response has been AWESOME from all sectors of this island.
Thanks
Lea

We would join in but we are still in the states. Pregnant daughter is coming out. I asked her to please wear a hat and have plenty of water. We will be there in spirit.
