I used to live on a barrier pennisula off the coast of new jersey so, I've been thru hurricanes and nor'easters and knew what action to take when they came.
What do islanders do; stay in their houses, are there shelters?
The reason I ask is by the looks of things I may be staying somewhere mid-island (stx) and I did'nt see too much natural protection there.
Maybe everyone just battens down the hatches and makes sure they have lots of rum.

Hello Ironman,

Many people stay in their houses and batten down like you said... some with rum and others with prayer... and likely some do a little of both. 😉

If you feel your residence is strong enough/protected then what you would do is tie down chairs and tables outside or bring them inside so there isn't anything lose to fly around, cut hedges and trees that are close to the house and close to power lines connected to the house, board up windows on the house with wood or hurricane shutters, try to place car wherever you feel its less open to the elements, unplug electrical equipment, get a battery operated radio to keep up with the news for as long as you can, get supplies (water, food that doesn't require refrigeration, batteries, flashlight, candles, first aid, medicines), see if friends or neighbors need anything/help and then head inside to wait it out.

If you don't feel like your residence is secure you might stay with a friend or neighbor or go to a shelter. Shelters are often at schools, churches - buildings that are seen as secure, they are announced during hurricane preparation time on the radio, news.

Hope that helps.
