Alriiiiiiiiiiighty then. Actually really saw my very first no-seeum!!! Smacked her dead, but she had already bitten me and a welt ensued. Black little dot of a thing, little smaller than the head of a pin - fleck of dust or something I thought, but no ! Smack....and when I looked at it....sure enough!

Oh yeah....it happened at 10:30ish this morning so the HECK with the theory that they'll bite only at sunset! AND I was not on the beach but in my apt!!!! UGH!

I hope I no-seeeum much longer, not much more room for nibbles on arms and legs.
🙁

don't feel bad -- i get eaten alive by those buggers everytime i'm on island.

btw, locals -- who had been locals for a long time -- told me they were never bothered by them, that they had built up some kind of immunity to them. does anyone know how true this is?

It's very true. I lived here only 2 weeks when they started leaving me alone. Poor Paul hasn't been so lucky! Haa! Sorry, Paul! Another thread mentioned that we build up an immunity to the chemical that causes the welt/itch. Still get eaten, just don't know it. I dunno if that is true or not, but I don't get bitten very often. Not that I notice, anyway.

Are they the guys that get you on the beach at sunset.. or are those "sand fleas" something else?

Same deal - usually reported on the beach at sunset....but I've put that lie to rest once and for all.........visit me in my apt.........which is of course only about 50 feet or so above the oceans edge. Morning and late afternoon!!!!!
