Hello to everyone!
My friend and I are thinking about moving to St. Thomas for a couple of months, maybe June and July. We are both college students who would like to get away from the Midwest. I was wondering if anyone could give us some advice about finding jobs...Will anyone hire someone for only a couple of months? How to find an apartment? Would it be a good idea to come down there for a visit first? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you in advance for your help.

Most of us suggest coming on a pre-move visit. June and July are low season in terms of tourism so jobs will be a little leaner than during high season. Lots of advice is offered on the message board, so spend some time learning all about us. Most every question seems like it's been asked and anwered a million times, but there's always a new slant or persons perspective. Enjoy.

Hello,

If I read correctly you want to come down just for 2 months? Problems with that are that most employees aren't going to want to hire just for 2 months and June/July are slow season (Aug/Sept/Oct getting slower... before things pick up again in Nov). Also landlords aren't going to be too excited about renting for 2 months (sometimes for 6 months some landlords huff...).

What about saving up money and camping on St. John for 3 or 4 weeks for a trip. Getting away on vacation!

Islander-
Thank you for your honest advice. I was afraid that this might be the case. Although I completely understand, I'm kind of sad. But, you have made a great suggestion about camping on St. John for a few weeks. Do you know of places to camp? The one I found was Cinnamon Bay. Just curious if there were any others so we could maybe move around and explore a little. Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it.

Maho Bay Campground is where I spent a week and feel in love with the islands. In fact I feel in love with them enough to retire here....I would heartily recommend a stay at Maho Bay Campground.

Hello Fireball,

If you really want to go with that plan of looking for work for 2 months here is what you could do. Buy a round-trip ticket for 60 days, make sure its one that you can change the date if you need to (you will likely incur a $100 change fee if you should change it). Come down with the intention of staying in a small b&b and/or camping for a few weeks while trying to find a job and maybe a room-mate situation. If after a couple weeks the job/apartment situation doesn't pan out then change your ticket to stay a shorter time (whatever your money will allow) and enjoy the rest of the trip as vacation time.

Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay & Vie's East End Campground are your camping options on St. John. No campgrounds on St. Thomas but you could stay at a small hotel/inn. On St. Croix their is Mt. Victory for camping.

Greetings Islander and Island Paul-
My thanks to the both of you for all of your help and suggestions. I have decided to come down for a while this summer to just relax, explore, and learn. Hopefully it will be my pre-visit move since I am in the process of applying to the university there. Hey, maybe we'll run into one another some day when I get down there and I will buy you a drink. Again, thanks so much.
