My wife and I want to visit the island next year to see how bad we really want to move there. Right now we are expecting a little girl coming in Sept. We both want to learn so much about the island. We both worry about providing for our family there. We are not to looking to get rich just enjoy what the island is all about, the sun, the views, the sand, the great people, and the lack of the hustle and bustle. Any help would be great help. We will move to the island we just don't know when, but life is to short to wait forever!

Thank You

Jarrett

Saint Croix or Saint Thomas is the two on our list. We want all that the island has to offer, but also want to be able to afford it as well.

My Opinion you get a Bigger Bang for the Buck on STX as far as Real Estate values are concerned. Gas is much Cheaper as well.

"bang for the buck" ... perhaps a poor choice of words in light of the crime rate? 🙁

If you haven't already done so, dig deep into these pages using the search tool and you'll probably get answers to all your questions (and More!).

Good luck.

fdr,
the Etymology was correct based on the slang meaning of Bang. "Perhaps" you could share the difference in and the amount of crime on STT v STX. Although the question was about affordability. However I'm sure the poster will appreciate your input on crime.

i would like to know what everyone thinks about crime also, we want to feel safe also. We do come from a place where you must look your doors and watch your surroundings. It is a way of life.

Do a search on the word crime and you will be overwhelmed with opinions and facts.

But what you should really be doing is reading 10 pages of threads a day until you've read it all. This board is better then any book you're going to buy. There is a wealth of information on this board for someone interested in what living here is like. And just because the thread is 6 months or 3 years old does not mean the information is outdated. It takes about 10 years to get things to change here except maybe restaurant ownerships. So if you're serious please start reading. 🙂 Good Luck.

Hey Lizard,

I wasn't criticizing your etymology at all; it's perfectly fine -- I was just thinking about the wordplay, as I hear news on the radio pretty much every day about shootings in a community of just 60K people.

Betty is spot-on with her suggestions; the archives are a gold mine for anyone thinking of moving here. Reading the local papers online is another great resource.

fdr,
Just a matter of curiosity, have you ever been to St Croix.

Morning, Lizard,

Yes, I've visited friends there. As I said, your phrasing simply brought to my mind what I hear on the morning news on various STX stations, nothing more. I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my offhand remark. And, I'm grateful that I have no personal experience with crime on any of the islands; hope it will always remains so.
