My husband and I have been here since August. We had our vehicles shipped and were surprised at what happend. Our first vehicle, was scheduled to arrive on the 12th of September, we finally got it on the 19th. Okay, a little wait, but hey, we are, after all,on "island time." So this past Friday (September 30th), we got a call about our second vehicle. Apparently, it has been here since SEPTEBER 12th!!! Yes, it has been just sitting there, no one called! Their explanation? "we didnt have a number to reach you at." Ironically enough, they found the number on Friday, and when we picked it up we saw the paperwork that was in the vehicle that had ALL of our information on it. We had been told that it would be here on the 5th of October, so we were waiting patiently and thought we would call this coming week. Needless to say, we paid for a rental for a week extra and when we went to get our first vehicle, the 2nd one was sitting there and NO ONE SAID A WORD ABOUT IT!! Amazing, isn't it? My husband laughed it off (i love that man), but there has GOT to be someone held accountable. Although I am sure no one will face any consequences, I wanted to let all of you who are moving your stuff here, to call, call, call and ask if it is here yet. Please learn from our mistake and good luck!

Did you handle the shipping details on your own? Which shipper was involved? Curious mind.

Thanks for the advice! Shipping the car is one of the biggest worries I have. Do you know if you can ship a car that has a loan on it?

No, you cannot ship a vechical with a lean on it - it's against most loan contracts to remove the car from the mainland US (unless your military and taking it to Europe, then the usually let it go).

Some lenders do allow it. Check with them first. Most don't, as said before.

Our vehicle was shipped by the military, but O'Neals was the receiver. They are the ones who did not call or let us know. We shipped a vehicle with a lean on our own, we just had to get a letter from our bank giving us permission to take it, which was a requirement by the shipper. I still would recommend shipping a vehicle, you just have to be diligent about calling. Good luck!

Ford Motor Credit was our leinholder and let us ship our truck. It took two months of gathering paperwork to make it happen though and a lot of frustration. Lee from Managed Freight took care of our truck shipping and everything worked out well. He gets a lot of props from this board.

We have more than enough cars on STT already, and plenty of them are for sale. Save yourself the hassle and expense of shipping and get one on island. This is just MY opinion, of course. Remember, we are just an island and we have limited space here. If people keep shipping in cars, then there won't be any space left to drive them! Haha! The traffic is already out of control. Why add to the problem? Just buy one when you get here. There, that's my 2 cents. 🙂

Oh, one more little tidbit: If you ARE shipping your vehicle, ask the shipper what the regs are for loading the vehicle. Lots of people cram them full and then find out that the shipper has certain restrictions regarding how much stuff can go in it.

A few more of my two cents. We most likely will not ship a vehicle again, although we plan on driving our vehicle till it dies. We brought a new Ford Explorer. My husband and I are good drivers with a good driving record. Be prepared to have your new vehicle 'islandized' with a few dings, scrapes, etc. It just seems to happen and you just seem to except it. I have seen nice cars on island, but they are not driven much. If you are in an accident, if you can negotiate between parties you might fair better than getting police involved. With the exception of injuries. Call 911 right away as it still takes awhile to have someone reach you depending on where you are and how well you give directions. In the instance of accidents remember that the islands are like small towns. The cops most likely know the other party than you and will side with them if it comes down to it. I don't like to think of it as racism, but rather who knows who type of thing. However, other instances have happened where the innocent party was arrested or towed for driving drunk even when they were stone cold sober. I can't say that life is fair and neither are the islands. Anyway, just a bit of hopefully usefull info. 🙂
