Individual Health Insurance...

I know this is a very important subject to many folks in the VI's, and those contemplating a move to the islands. As I understand it, no companies are writing new individual health insurance policies at this time, nor have they since September 2010.

That said, has anyone heard of International Medical Group, and their Long Term Medical Insurance described as "Global Medical Insurance"? It SEEMS to be applicable to US citizens living in the US Virgin Islands. (www.imglobal.com)

If anyone has insight or knowledge of this company, please share. It could be useful to many of us looking for health insurance.

Thanks.

On the plane a few days ago, BUPA was recommend to me by a team of pharmaceutical reps. It is specifically for people living in Latin America and the Caribbean, but it covers treatment in the US as well. I have not looked into it much yet - has anyone used or heard of them?

Some of us use BUPA, but they are not writing new individual health insurance policies in the USVI. They are only renewing existing policies.

My wife and I have had BUPA (previously Amedex) policies since 2007. Our policies have a $2000 annual deductible with a $20,000 deductible for preexisting conditions. It does not cover prescription drugs unless prescribed as part of a hospital stay and is designed for catastropic health coverage. The annual premium is based on your age and for us (55-60) it is about $2600/year each. We have both had a major medical issue since covered by BUPA and the insurance covered everything we expected it to. However, I was under the impression that they were no longer writing new policies for VI residents.

Ah, that may be so about BUPA then. The rep thought they were writing policies now, but you know secondhand information and all that...we are blessed with stateside coverage that covers us here, so I wish I had more to offer. I would be interested in hearing about alternatives as well though, never hurts to have more information!
