INFO - ISLAND HOPPING

I am in the process of setting up to move to the islands by November. Originaly I thought I would move to ST.CROIX, because you can actually find great deals on real estate, and it looks like the island has a lot going for it. Now I am thinking about moving to ST. THOMAS, for this season and take sometime looking for a permanent place to settle.

Does anyone know if there is a water taxi/ferry between ST.CROIX and ST.THOMAS? I know it is roughly 40 miles, do people just keep boats to commute back and forth? I.e. working on ST.THOMAS and living on ST.CROIX.

Also, I am planning a last recon trip next month for three weeks, starting at ST. THOMAS. Would anyone suggest a better way of lodging for three weeks other than as cheap as I can get from one of the resorts? I am almost tempted to go down with only a couple of nights reserved and scouting out a better place to stay once I am in town. Any suggestions?

Thanks! - Josh

There is a new fast ferry between St Thomas and St Croix, however it takes about 2 hours and costs $50 round trip. The quicker way to island hop is the seaplane, but of course it is more expensive. The only people I know who commute are government workers, because it is free!! 😉

You might want to stay at Villa Fairview for the three weeks. Good luck!

As for places to stay while looking around the island, rather then staying at a resort that generally charges by night or a week. Perhaps you should stay in a bed and breakfast or in. Ronnie on this board has some short term rentals, that might work for you. Maybe look into that as an option. Rather then staying in a resort.

And as for working on one island and living on another, the only folks really that do this is, St. John/St. Thomas or Water Island/St. Thomas. St. Croix is rather far for this commute by water or air twice a day although some do it. IE. Some doctors have practices on both islands so spend one or two days over on St. Croix and then one or two days on St. Thomas, government employees, attorneys, other business people. So it is done, usually by seaplane, or AA commuter flights.

There are acutally some business people that come over from Puerto Rico, to work on/at big stores like K-mart, Radio Shack. But this is not the every day Joe and Jane workers, usually managers that are checking out whats going on and making sure things are as they should be.

Good Luck!! Happy Planning.
