Hello everyone,
I have applied for a position on St. Croix and would love any information anyone might have to offer. Is anyone familiar with Frederiksted Healthcare Inc.? I haven't found a clinic website, but input from anyone who works there, has worked there, or has received healthcare at the clinic would be more enlightening. Whether I will meet their needs is questionable as they are in need of a Nurse Practitioner now and I will not graduate and be able to move until early fall. Thus far, I have only had limited email communication and it would be great to know more about the clinic for any future interactions.
Also:
It appears bringing my two cats is not much of an issue other than finding a residence that allows furry friends. Is there any issue in getting them back to the states (one post I read indicated there was not).
How easy is it to find a trustworthy vehicle on the island? Mine is a '99 and transporting it to STX would probably cost as much if not more than my station wagon is worth.
Thanks, M

Hello M,

You can find new cars, good used cars (newer model, good shape, more $), decent 'island cars' (older, ok shape, less $) as well as real beaters. The range is there, so to answer your question yes you can find a trustworthy vehicle when you get to St. Croix. When buying a used car from owner get it looked over by a mechanic. Perhaps some of the folks that live on St. Croix can suggest mechanics they use. There was a recent thread about the process, paperwork and registration requirements of buying (and selling) a used car; you might want to find it and read it over.

Welcome to the board & all the best with your plans,

Thanks for the info Islander. Should I come join everyone on the island, I'll leave my car behind. I GOT THE WEBSITE! for the clinic. (Would that have to do with island internet connections - not there but showing up later? Who knows). My interest is has peaked as it sounds right up my alley - great mission statement and they cover so many areas of healthcare. I'm still open for any comments concerning the organization. The more I can learn about Frederiksted Healthcare the better. Have a great evening, M

My husband is a veteran Nurse Practitioner (he precepts RNP's for Uof W) who practiced on St X until we left last year and he had the following to say:
The Clinic serves a mainly low income population, lots of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.
The clinic is a really nice building and is a good facility The people of the Virgin Islands deserve good healthcare and the Clinic at Frederiksted would be a good place to learn your trade.
They have organizational issues which would make working there challenging for anybody, let alone a brand new RNP. The patient base tends to have non-compliance and lifestyle issues.
That said - you could really make a difference by serving their patient base, so best of luck.

Thanks so much Jane!
I have training specific to the management of diabetes, hyperlipidemia and HTN in a specialized clinic, as well as with the underserved population, many with compliance issues. The organizational issues sound like my only concern. Who doesn't want to work in a pleasant and supportive environment, especially since I'll be on such a big learning curve as a new NP - at least I've been a RN for a number of years which will help in some respects. Your husband didn't by chance work with the National Health Service Corps? I became aware of the clinic through the NHSC website. Again, they need someone now and I still have a few months to go before I would be able to take a position should I be considered. We'll see where life takes me, M
