Insurance for Rental

Good afternoon everyone,

I will coming down to STX on 11/12/11 for three months. I am renting a car for a portion of my stay. My Vehicle insurance company states that I will not be covered while in STX for rentals (I dont know exactly why). I do know that the Visa card I am using does carry collision protection. I of course will have private health insurance. My concern is that I know in my state that mandatory insurance minimums are strictly enforced. If there is an insurance law in the USVI, is this covered by the rental company and I just cover the collision responsibility? I have never rented a car and any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Jordan.

your credit card coverage likely applies only to rentals of 30 days or less. You may have to work the system (ie close out the rental, get a different car etc) to maintain collision coverage. The liability coverage situation varies depending on the company used, I believe.

If you have an AmEx card, give them a call and ask them. My understanding is that they cover collision / liability for $25 per rental, don't think there is a time limit ... check with 'em to make sure.

I believe the AMEX limit is 42 days, but check on this.

When we rent long term (several months) the rental firm "resets" the rental every month (so that they can get paid). Therefore the AMEX charge of $19.95 (or $24.95 for new card holders), for collision damage only, is charged each month. To my knowledge liability insurance is NOT covered by AMEX.
