Are there any places on St Thomas that I can go to to access the web?

Yes, there are. In Charlotte Amalie there is Beans & Bytes, which is probably most like you might have been used to elsewhere. Meaning, coffee shop and then a room of rows of computer stations. This is located in the Royal Dane Mall.

There is also a very nice FREE internet set up on the second floor of the Tiffanys store on Main Street. They have a small coffee and drink service as well, and the good news it's FREE. It's basically in place to check your e-mail and then, if someone is waiting, let them get online. This was my main source for internet during my first week living on the island. They never asked me to get off.

In Red Hook you have a couple of choices. 3 somewhat cramped workstations at the East End Secretarial service, no coffee. And in the Grateful Deli a more typical internet/cafe situation. Grateful Deli is on the same level and across the parking are from Duffys. East End Secretarial service is on the 2nd floor of the same building.
