Internet Question

My little family has been researching and considering a move to St. Thomas for the last few years. The question I am having a hard time finding an answer to is exactly how the internet speed is? Here in the States, we run off of our own fiber optic cable and completely rely on it for our entertainment. We do not have cable/satellite but run Netflix/hulu through our XBOX 1, anyone else run any devices like this that could give me an idea?

You can go online to Innovative and BroadbandVI to see their rates and speed options. Seems that several people here do what you're doing ((the search engine will bring up several recent threads) but that I can't help you with as I have an Innovative package of landline/cable/internet which is perfect for my needs.

Thanks OldTart! I will check out the services and the search engine! Just curious how long have you lived on the Islands?

In a couple of weeks it'll be 32 years. Time flies!

That is amazing. My husband and I have been considering the move from Kentucky to St.Thomas for some time. We are nervous, but it's something we want to do sooner rather than later. Would love to hear any advice you have on the transition from the States to the Islands?

The transition is so subjective - some have no problem settling in, others quickly realize that island living just isn't for them and then there's all the in-betweens. I was moved around constantly as a child, a way of life which continued throughout my young adult life so for me it was the norm to adapt. Before moving here I'd spent 17 years living on the US East Coast after being born and raised in the UK. When I made the move here, I really didn't give any thought as to whether this would be a "forever" move or something relatively temporary. Nobody was more surprised than I to realize one day that I'd lived here longer than I'd lived anywhere else in the world! Of course one never knows what the future holds but I think I can say with some firm degree of certainty that this is likely where I'll end my days. But I do come from a very long-lived family on both sides so one never really knows ... 😀

Good luck with the researching and of course do a PMV to see as much as you can see first-hand before making any decisions, particularly since you have a family to accommodate.

Thank you for the advice. We have moved around a lot as well. I was a military brat and my husband is originally from Canada, so we have both bounced around and have been able to adapt. Looking forward to a PMV!

This website and forum have been a perfect resource guide, so glad it's here!

To answer your original question. I have the basic broadband VI connection and use a roku to stream netflix and amazon prime with no problems.

Internet speeds are not what you will see in the States. My brother just sent me a screenshot of his Speed test. 168mbps down and 24 up. We have 25 mbps plan and it rarely hits that. Then again rum is cheap. The weather beautiful and 3 minute drive to a beach where we are usually only ones there

I've looked at the speed tests now and then but since we've been running fine I don't to look often. I watch Netflix and some others that my smart DVD player gets for free with BBVI on STX all the time with no issues while at the same time using the computers. Don't even have cable TV or satellite.

I pay for 18/2 with innovative and get it

I had Choice for years, but it was never very reliable.... paid for the 10mbps and got around 2. Switched over to Innovative recently, pay for the 12 and usually get it or very close to it through the wireless router. Went for it when we had to get the evo box upgrade for the landline anyhow. It was a simple call to have them turn on the internet once we decided to go that route.

We use Innovative and in many ways our service is better than FIOS in NYC.

I have the $70 innovative and I use Netflix, Hulu and Amazon stream exclusively. No cable tv here, waste of $80. I get everything I want/need and that I can't get I download... HBO stuff usually.

Thank you all for your input. Hoping things work out and we can actually make the move down that way! I really do appreciate all the responses.
