Internet speeds have been very much faster everywhere in FL where I've been visiting. Even at the airport where I am right.

Two decades ago internet speeds were faster stateside than they've ever been here!!!

What are the chances that public places like stores and restaurants have free WIFI?

Not the case on STJ. It's one of the things that often baffles our visitors.

Does anyone have any recent experience with the EVO service from Innovative? On St. Croix they are advertising 25Mbps @ $99.99/month versus BroadbandVI's 5Mbps for the same price.

After being stateside for a few weeks and getting lightning fast speeds, wherever I went, it's hard coming back to BBVI 5 mbs for $99.99 per month with a fair signal.

Can't help you with the high speed offered but I have the basic Innovative EVO and it's fine for my purposes - but I don't do any movie streaming or high tech gaming so don't need high speed. Hope you get the info you're looking for!

Have you had any long periods of time with the service being down? (I have a backup but still curious) How are your transfer speeds and ping times from SpeedTest?

If the power goes out I have a simple battery backup which keeps the computer going for an hour. The longest the system has actually been down was I think maybe 3 hours just once when something or the other went wrong, shortly after the EVO was connected. Otherwise maybe once every couple of months for half an hour. I've no idea what the speeds mean (as long as I can work I pay no attention to tech details) but I checked the speed test you linked and got ping 24, download 3.06 and upload 0.78. I'm sure you know what those numbers mean!

Innovative's always had a pretty bad reputation, as far as I can tell, but this 25 mbps deal is looking pretty attractive. Has their service and reliability gotten any better in the past few years?

VITELCO, which was the previous corporate name, was owned by one Jeffrey Prosser. Over many years he systematically took money from the company for his own personal use and lavish lifestyle. It's a long and involved story but probably the easiest way to learn about it is to go to the (either St Thomas or St Croix) "Source"online newspaper website for their numerous articles and updates.

To answer the question, yes, service and reliability has vastly improved now that revenue is going where it should.
