Internship on STT

Has anyone heard of the Department of Labor's LIFT program? Its apparently a summer internship program for college students to intern in government or private industries on the island. I'm a graduate student in Wash., DC and am going to apply for the program. Its 6-8 weeks in the summer from July thru August. If I get it I assume I'll be working with VITEMA or the Virgin Island Fire Service since I'm a firefighter and my masters is in homeland security/emergency management.

Any suggestions on where to rent/who is most reliable rental company? I suppose East End would be the best even though I'd have to commute downtown on weekdays. Who has the most reasonable rental car rates/dependability on the island? ALSO, ive been doing a lot of research on gyms on STT... is there ANY?? I havent found anything decent, but then again I'm used to stateside luxuries. 😉

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks-

CNUfan

Are you a Virgin Islander? I thought that the summer employment programs were basically for local folk...

Well they said theyve never had anyone from the mainland apply before, but that there is a first for everything and that I am eligible 🙂

Hmm, interesting. I had always thought that the summer program was basically a make work program for VI kids who had gone away to college. Best wishes to you. Let us know if you are selected. I would wait until then to make living arrangements, if I were you. 😉

Oh definetly- just trying to feel out how to plan if I do get it. I've been doing a lot of research on the island and of course this forum is awesome for information. I assume you live in the East End- thats where I think I would like to go. What is the average commute time from a place like Red Hook or Nazareth Bay to downtown? If its anything like Washington DC traffic then I will have to reconsider coming!!

Once school is out, traffic drops exponentially. From Red Hook to town, probably 20+ minutes. There is a fire station in Tutu, which is much closer, and VITEMA may be on the other side of town- the phone book says Contant. Not sure where their offices are.

Gyms- there is one at Antilles School in Frenchman's Bay and one near Cost-U-Less.

Re: housing: You might post on the classifieds here if you do get the gig.

Pas de quoi. Just save my house first and don't hassle me at the airport! 😉
