Is there a bird person on STX?

My cat brought in a baby bird. Thankfully, it survived, but now I don't know what to do with it. I've been told that mama bird won't take it back after it's been touched. I don't know if that's true, but I can't find the nest anyway. I know there are people who take in wounded birds. Is there someone on St. Croix? I think it's a crane.

If no one knows of such a person, how about info on what , and how, to feed it. I tried milk in an eye dropper. He (or she) took a little. The pet store is closed, the vet is closed. (would rather not call the emergency number if I can manage to keep it alive until Tuesday.)

Thanks for any input. In the meantime, I will search online for information.

Yes, try calling Toni Lance at 340-773-1839. There was once a nice article about her in the Avis about how she helps injured birds.

If you can't find anyone to talk to there is a lady here on STJ you can call - she rehabs birds and is off to the States though tomorrow (Tues) for a wildlife conference. I'll give you her number if you can't find someone to help - just send me a PM

Pia

Thanks for Toni's name and number.

I did some research online and followed the advise. What I read said if the bird had any feathers and could grip my finger, it was old enough to just set it free, somewhere up off the ground. I put the bird on top of my shrubs, and forced myself to leave it alone (so as not to scare off mama bird, if she was watching).

When I went out there this morning, the bird was gone.

I will keep Toni's number handy. My cat (kitten, really) is apparently going to be a hunter.

Thanks, again.
