Island Hopping Suggestions

Afternoon all, looking for some suggestions from the board,

We wanted to do something a little different this year for Christmas week. We were thinking of island hopping to someplace relatively close to STX either a direct flight, or one connection maybe.

What we like:
Way off the beaten path
Lots of seclusion
Nature, hiking, secluded beaches
Interesting architecture
Wildlife
rustic

We really have not been to very many other islands, outside of the USVI. Culebra was one option, we have been there and love it, however, I really wanted to go someplace new to us.

Thoughts?

Thank you

You can try Vieques. I hear they have all the things you're looking for, but I've never been there myself. You could book your ticket from the states flying into St. Croix and flying back to the states out of San Juan. Then you can book a separate two-way multicity ticket St. Croix-Vieques-San Juan (probably under $150) on either Seaborne Airlines or Cape Air. Seaborne doesn't fly St. Croix to Vieques daily, though. If you're flying from an East Coast gateway you could probably do the whole itinerary for under $600!

A more expensive option would be Anguilla... to get there from St. Croix, you fly to St. Martin and take the boat over.... or fly to St. Thomas and connect to a direct flight with LIAT. To get back to the states from Anguilla, you take the boat back to St. Martin and fly from there. The airfare is much more expensive if you fly out of Anguilla, though.

You could also try Saba, Statia, St. Kitts, Nevis, or Dominica like the other poster mentioned. However, they are more expensive options than Vieques. Coastal Air has direct flights to some of the islands I named - do a Google search and give them a call for details. Expect to pay $800 and up for the entire itinerary (states to St. Croix to other island to States)

Agree, Dominica has EVERYTHING you are seeking.

Mike Foster at Coastal Air flies there a couple times a week from STX. Give him a call: 340-773-6862.

FYI - he also flies to Nevis.

Somebody I met in PR does a trip during Christmas, I think, to Mona Island off PR. Let me see if I can find it again.esting architecture somewhere on PR's west coast in addition to the hiking to secluded beach. You'd probably see inter

How about Virgin Gorda, Anagada, Jost Van Dyke, Saba?

Been to VG, definitely enough to do see for a week
Been to Jost, once on land, many times afloat. What is there to do for week?
Same for Saba and Ang? What to do for a week?

Dante, sent you a PM.

Gee Blu4U what is there not to do but explore a new place, make new friends, swim, snorkle, hike, dive, fish, kayack, check out places to eat and drink, drive around and get a real feel for a place, as well as relax on beautiful beaches, etc.
Sounds like you'd be bored, tho.
They did say they liked rustic, wildlife, etc.

Wow lana. what's with the tude? I was just wondering what the top 10 "on land" things to do are? Sorry-- no offense. I haven't spent much time on land on those islands. Like most folks, I visted while sailing so I don't know muck past the moorings and sand and yatchy bars. Maybe you could share....

I'll share mine for VG
1) spring bay at sun set
2) baths at sunrise
3) "goat sh!t" mini-golf at the copper mine. (those in the Know, know)
4) dancing at the copper mine (don't ask)
4) hike to the fire tower
5) Savanah bay.
6) Walking the cold atlantic shore line
7) did I mention savanah bay
8) hike from baths to devils to top o' baths
9) onion rings at top of the baths
10)snokling to the left of trunk bay (don't let the purple jellies scare you)
11) any beach at nail bay
12) brunch at ltlle dix
13) driving to northsound and stopping for photo opps, skip the bitter end and explore the hoods.
14) running along the ridge past nail bay
15) having your rental car waiting at the dock with the keys under the mat.
16) my friend's lovely villa
17) my friend's even lovelier infinity pool
18) the rock formations.
19) kinnup tree at nail bay
20) lack of cell service

Now show me yours for Jost, saba and ang...

Dominica, natures island.

(tu) Amazing place.

Hi Dante,

We have friends who own Roots Jungle Retreat. We have never been to their place, but we did spend a lot of time on the island, years ago! We were back on a cruise ship stop last year, and nothing had changed. I really think you would like it a lot!!

Roots is really a "back to nature" type of place, based on pictures I have seen and posts, on facebook, by my friends. Let me know if you want some contact info. I'm sure you could also just google it.

I would go back for a visit, for sure!

Best,
Juanita

Enjoy, wherever you choose.

Is VAL still flying from STX? They used to go to Culebra and Vieques from STX and used to be the least expensive and easiest. I havn't spoke with them in a while.

Hey Dante,
Love Dominica, want to go back real bad.
Whealan and his wife Kris from IB designs have a cottage there. Here is the web site. http://www.islandboydesigns.com/about-us/dominica/
Click on About Us to see info. on the cottage.

Also, love Tortola and Virgin Gorda.
Seaborne airlines is now flying into Tortola.

VAL stopped flying to St. Croix. The only way to get to Vieques is Cape Air (daily) or Seaborne (2x-3x weekly). Seaborne is not flying to Tortola until later this year.

I don't know whether or not they still offer it but LIAT used to have an island-hopping deal which was very reasonably priced. Friends did it and said it was a blast - sort of like an expansion of the "one day in each port of call" cruise ship routine but with more flexibility.

I just saw an ad in Island Trader for Sunshine Air - $295 RT/Dominica for Sept/Oct/ travel.
Also same cost for Nevis. Don't know if that's a good price or not so you'll have to check it out/
Page 45 of 9/13 -20th issue.
Dominica is an awesome place:
365 rivers
black sand beaches
Trafalgar Falls
The Emerald Pool
The Crater Lakes
Sulpher Pits
Blue Mt.
to name a few.

All of these I have visited before they became tourist attractions but it is a beautiful island.
Diving is not great due to all the fresh river water entering the ocean off of the coasts, however frog legs and river shrimp are quite tastey.

The diving in Saba and Anegada is simply phenomenal and the islands are quaint and interesting. Google it.
Anagada has great salt ponds and mangroves for flyfishing as well as PINK flamingos.
Great places to relax, dive and enjoy being away from it all. There's lots to do on Jost as well.

Actually the diving in Dominica is very good - this website shows many of the available dives - and I can highly recommend the 'roots jungle retreat' -- Pat and Stacy are incredible hosts and the place is outstanding.
The island is beautiful and very unique in the Caribbean.

I'd be careful about Air Sunshine. Their safety record leaves a bit to be desired. Google it if you'd like.

For Dominica, try Coastal Air, LIAT or American Eagle via SJU. Because of the few American Eagle flights available to SJU, you may need to book your STX-SJU portion separate from SJU-Dominica.

i would suggest tortola which would meet all of your criteria except interesting architecture....but you need to know where to stay and which beaches are more natural and not inundated with tourists... smugglers cove is off the beaten path with great snorkeling,a wonderful man via generator who provides drinks, grilled fish sandwichesetc. his umbrellas and chairs are for free if you buy a drink. long bay is awesome and so long it becomes secluded , the furher offf you venture from the resort there. consider sugarmill for very intimate accomadations and an award winning foodresturant. always ask for a virgin island resident discount. another close destination for architecture is old san juan. stay at elconvento and you will feel like you are in europe. the christmas decorations are some of the most beautiful i have ever seen, but if you stay in old san juan you will have to venture out for more remoteness you will have to venture out much further. i would suggest heading towards the dorado, rincon area...pm me with any questions and let us know what you decide. have fun!ps we have stayed at both places numerous times and have always felt it would be great to be there at xmas.
