Job market

I'm planning a PMV in a few weeks and don't know much about SST, what is the job market like? I have a BA and have worked in government for the past few years. I'm pretty open minded about what kind of work I take. Is it hard to find employment? Also, how hard is it so get jobs on sail boats? I have some very limited experience.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

BA in what? Government jobs usually go to locals with a few exceptions.

I'm sorry I should have been clearer. The BA is in history and the government work was political. I'm not looking to continue in that line though.

Hi, Idigara71,

The easiest jobs (to get) are waiting tables and tending bar. Sailboat jobs are available too, but this is off season. When are you actually planning to move?

Retail jobs are always available, particularly jewelry, gift shops, etc., that cater to the tourists. With a degree, you might get a job substitute teaching as a part-time job. I've always thought that was a good plan to mix with mating on a boat or tending bar part time. Keep your brain active!

Where will you be staying during your PMV? For sailboat jobs, I recommend the east end, for retail, downtown is where the jobs will most likely be located, so maybe plan accordingly.

I agree with Trade. The government jobs are pretty much locals only. So are the bank jobs, unless you are interested in upper management.

If you have something to offer, not unusual to have multiple job offers, no matter the season.

Good luck.

I was out the other night with friends, all continentals. We had the discussion about how much money is here for the taking. With one exception, none of us came here with a job lined up. Now all four are making a lot of money here. One doing remodeling, one as a surveyer and one started a charter business taking tourists out for excursions. We talked about all the oppurtunities that are still here for anyone that wants to come and work hard.
I think these are mostly oppurtunities for a person that wants to start his or her own business because the wages when working for most employers here are not the greatest.

Greetings (First Time Posting)

I am relocating to STX in about 2 months from St Louis,Missouri------ currently I work in the field of social services/social work, can some one point me in the direction of looking for these type jobs.

I have worked with intense populations: commercial sex workers, substance abuse, low-income housing residents, etc. Teaching risk reductions (HIV Prevention Education), mental health, youth, Customer Service-Job Training Classes etc.

In the meantime, I proclaim my title as Artist, which I make handcrafted jewelry with stones, wire, and other mixed media. I also teach crafts to various groups.

You will probably find it easier to make a living here as Artist than anywhere, selling your jewelry and such. Just my opinion, I have artist friends that are having no trouble although they aren't rich, and I myself am doing a show soon and would never capitalize the "a."

Someone had a post a week or so ago about looking for local artist to display their crafts - check previous posts.

Hello All,

I will be on STX August 1st, I am pumped the move is finally here. I have the apartment squared away already but the job is still not. Restaurant jobs or some kind of boating excursion job is what I will prolly get at first since I just graduated college with a degree in Hospitality and Restaurant Administration and have managed a Ruby Tuesday before.I love bartending and serving so it should be a good time.

Jay,
I saw that you said one of your friends owns a boating excursion business which is awesome. My entrepreneur dream has always been to own a small wave runner rental business and I was just curious if you knew how hard it was to get into something like that. I know it takes money up front but what about the insurance and licensing?

Anyways, I cant wait to get to STX in about a week and get a new life started.

Take care,

Kyle

I am not sure but would imagine the liability is very high but is figured into the price of an excursion...I guess everything takes money....but there are plenty of folks out there to make loans if you have a good business plan.
If you get a chance, talk to the Small Business Administration (SBA) before you come down and they may hook you up with some of there lenders here and explain to you how the SBA loan works. Its a really good program.
Good luck Kyle!!

Wave runners are not that popular with the locals, quite a few people do not want them because of the noise and pollution. So really look into it before you put a lot of money down on rent somewhere. Also we do not have the tourism of stt so your going to have many lean months. And a big portion of our winter residents are older and would not be very appealling to that crowd.
