I was just wondering what types of positions a recent college grad could find in St. Thomas and St. John that would provide enough money to live on, besides being a bartender or a waiter? Do any of you know of any youngsters (over 18) who have come down to the Islands, found a job, and are still working and surviving on the profits of it? Just curious as to some personal stories that could give me hope. I realize that if you have enough money to get by on for the tourist season, you could live there ok, but I'm wondering about stateside people who live and work there year-round and have a steady income.

Stuck in Michigan,
Patrick

Hello Patrick,

There are college grads that come down and get non-restaurant jobs or some that attend college here and upon completion get non-restaurant work. Some of such positions are managers, nurses, doctor's assistants, teachers, office assistants, accountants, insurance or legal aid/office work. The problem is this - many young college grads or college students come down with the intention of "taking a break" so they come down to work a "fun" job for 3-6 months and return to school or to wherever. With this in mind many private sector office type employers don't want to invest the time and energy into training someone who they think will leave in 2 or 3 months and put the employer right back where they were with having to find someone new to work. Non-restaurant and tourist work can be found, you just need to show that you aren't part of the seasonal worker crowd. There are also some folks that worked restuarants because it is often an easier job to get then the office 9-5 stuff and then spent their days off securing the job they really intended and wanted to get. Then they either quit the restuarant job or if they were making good money then go down to part time.

What is your degree from college from? And where would you want to work?

Ha, ha! I know a guy who came down on a boat with 5 buddies after college- they were going to sail around the world. They went from Florida to St Thomas and got "stuck" here. The other 5 went back and got corporate jobs in Big America. This was many years ago! Also, I know of artists and boat builders who came here as youngsters, now have grandchildren. Most people here work several jobs- many times outside of their chosen career path. If you want to live here, you do what you have to do. There are some good EDC jobs, but you have to be a bona fide resident, meaning you have to live here a year first. There are plenty of career type folks- teachers, librarians, nurses, psychologists, lawyers...
