I'm interested in relocating to the vi's; I'm a carpenter by trade, and have many other talents; including, but not limited to, marina help, maintenence, mechanical, hotel motel management, and anything i put my mind and strengths to. I'm curious about initial living arraingements and finding employment. What about transportation and an island driver's licensce. Is it hard to obtain a license if your driving record on the mainland is "not the best".
Also what about dock and deck hands, mate, and steward positions aboard commercial and or private vessels.

Dear Rick,

Your questions are numerous - do a good search on this forum and you'll find answers to almost all of your basic questions concerning employment search, living arrangements, transportation, etc.

To the best of my knowledge, the local authorities don't check stateside driving records in issuing VI driving licenses. But if you have any sort of a driving problem which you might bring with you (DWI, speeding, whatever) do curb yourself here!!!

Good luck in your forum search - the answers are but a tap of the keys away.

Someone(not me) asked me that if you don't have a drivers license here in the states, due to child support issues, can you still get one in the VI??LA

I should point out that we have an excellent child support unit here and liason with the individual states is mandatory and very effective so any child support issues would be transferred to the VI with any move.

Hello Rick,

Welcome to the board. Scroll up to the top of this page and on the left side click on Home. From the home page there are links to information on housing, employment, transportation (which includes information on Driver License), along with other sections. If you read those sections you will get a good overall picture on those topics.

With your experience, particularly the marina/boat experience, you would find work.

Ditto what STT Resident said, don't think the local DMV communicates with stateside DMVs or require a driving record. They do ask on the application if you license has ever been suspended and why.
