Just bought a dingy and was charged 3 years of back registration fees?

Just bought a dingy and went to the airport to get it registered. The previous owner stopped using it in 2008 and it went into storage . DPNR charged me 3 years at 25.00 per year to get it legal. This doesn't sound right? I just bought it last week, well with in the 15 day grace period, the dingy was not in use and not under my control. Does anyone know the statute that says I am or I am not required to pay someones back registration fee's?

If you scraped the numbers off and had a bill of sale with no reference to the registration it could have been $50

So there is a law that says I'm responsible? How can that be?

Usually when you buy somthing that needs to be registered or licensed, you are responsible for paying any back taxes or fees. I think that's the way it is everywhere. At least it was where I'm from.

I bought a boat a few years ago and the same thing happened. I bought another boat and brought the bill of sale and just registered it = $50.
Also I think seniors (60) with the the VI Senior card get a discount.

If it helps, from our experience in the last 3 boats...

Boat regis will need to be current as you are registering a boat / vessel.

I don't think it is just the Virgin islands..That was the case even back in the states at the State Park and Marina where I worked and registered boats. (dingys included)

They go by the state regis number or here known as VI #, that stays forever with the boat.

On the bright side we just sold our 28ft boat and the new owner only had to pay the transfer fee of $5.00 since the regis is valid until 6-2011. He got the hundred plus dollar credit we paid as we have been registering it yearly all along since we owned and used it 🙂

Hope that helps 🙂
