I just finished a rather quirky mystery novel based on St Croix. It is not great literature and has a rather odd plot, but I was impressed with the author's observations and understanding of our island. The book :Afoot in St Croix" by Rebecca M Hale is hot off the press, just released last month. It follows her similar book "Adrift on St John" ,that I have not read yet, but requested from my ebook library.

"Afoot on St Croix" tells us that the author spent some time here and listened to a wide range of locals. It is always fun to read something that you can relate to. Some of the characters do seem familiar. I thought here description of the Governor and his entourage was quite amusing.

I am looking forward to reading her St John book, knowing it was written first. I don't have the same degree of familiarity with St John as I do with St Croix, but will be interested to see if Ms Hale sees it with same probing eyes . I'm sure we can nitpick some of the details, but she seemed to "get" the island better than other authors I have read.

I'm on the last chapter and it's entertaining and somewhat insightful, a good beach book.

I use a local county library in the states where I still have an active card. You might ask a relative or friend somewhere to access their local system.

OVERDRIVE is the software of choice for many local libraries and offers free and fee access to books.
