late july move

Moving to STT at the end of July / early August, and without Craigslist I'm a bit lost. I've been scanning this listserve and the VI Trader for apartments, cars, etc, and have found some good info. There seems to be some nice 2 bedrooms available but without a roommate I could not afford it. Is there anyone out there moving around the same time in need of a roommate or someone to look for a place with? I'm 23, already have a steady job waiting for me there, but not a huge amount of savings. I have had good luck with roommates in the past and have lived with females, males, don't really care either way, just looking for a nicer apartment preferably in the south east area. I was there a few weeks ago, but mostly just securing my job and not really island touring/apartment hunting, so I'm not entirely sure what to expect. Will it be easier if I just wait to do this a bit closer to moving time? I doubt I will be able to make another trip down there before I move for good. I know that's not the best way to do it, but that's pretty much my only option.
please help!

Best thing to do is get temporary housing until you find what you want. (Example Villa Fairview) Almost impossible to line up a rental long distance unless it is for vacationing and they are very expensive. It doesn't usually take more than a week or a couple of weeks to find long term rental. Island Trader even has roommates wanted ads and you really should see the place in person. My two cents.

I agree with Teresa & if you stay at Villa Fairview you won't have to jump right into something & will have time to find the right place for you (or a roommate.) Good luck!

I am looking to move down there soon and wanted to know how you scored a job...what did you do? Where did you look? I am looking for one and wanted to know how you found one or if you have any helpful tips. I would love to hear how you did it! Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Two of you recommended in this thread the Villa Fairview for a short stay until someone finds permanent housing on STT.

Where do you recommended for a similar one to two week stay on STX that is somewhat inexpensive and close to Christiansted?

Thanks!

Doug

hi brooke- I am a teacher and it is hiring season for most schools. I saw that there was an opening for my subject and after back and forth emails, I went down there and was offered the job after interviewing and teaching a sample class. I wish I was able to tell you more about other kinds of jobs, I'm not on island yet and I really don't know what its like first hand. I guess just stay on top of ads in the paper and in island trader and people on this site have been very helpful. through various postings, it seems like there are plenty of restaurant/bar tending/hotel jobs to be had. I wish I could be of more help. I'm sure you will find something.

Daniel (who posts on this board regularly) just put up a message about the availability of his apartment for just this). You might like to check that possibility out.

Thanks Jane.

I also looked through some old threads and some other recommendations for the first week or so on STX were:

www.caribbeancottages.com

Pink Fancy

or

Villa Morales
