This sounds interesting.

"Here it is, the long anticipated first ever

BAT EXPERIENCE

at Hull Bay!

DPNR Fish & Wildlife is presenting a slideshow introducing the bats of the Virgin Islands,
plus displays on their ecology, conservation, and bat houses. Participants will
have the opportunity to see how bats are studied in the USVI, and if extremely
lucky will have the chance to meet a bat up close and personal (this is entirely up
to the bats themselves, we cannot guarantee a real live bat but we will try!)

Saturday 26 May from 7pm at the Hull Bay Hideaway Pavilion, St Thomas.

This event is free and suitable for all ages. Participants do not need to bring
anything.

For information call 775-6762."

Hull Bay Hideaway is across the road from the beach - the pavilion is right there in the complex - very easy to find.

Sidetrack for a bat tale (one of a few)!

A couple of years ago it was the quiet end of a busy night at the pub and just one couple was sitting at the bar having an after dinner drink and chatting with the bartender who'd started cleaning up in preparation for closing. I was likewise getting my kitchen cleaned up and joining in occasionally with the conversation (the kitchen was open to the bar) when I suddenly saw a quick flash go by me. It was one of the cats coming in for the night but I knew that sort of "flash move" and realized she probably had brought something in from outside that we didn't want or need. Just as I turned to grab her and remove what I assumed was more likely than not a lizard, there was a big flurry, something flew upwards, crashed into the ceiling fan and landed in a heap on my prep table. Good grief, a stunned bat was laying there!

The cat was all ready to leap onto the table to grab the hapless creature and, as I scooped her up, the bat recovered and went swooping into the bar. The poor girl went screaming for the bathroom and slammed the door shut behind her, the bat crashed into another ceiling fan in the bar and dropped behind the bar, the bartender rushed towards it with a big bar tray presumably to thump it and I yelled, "NO! NO! THROW A BAR RAG OVER IT!" The girl's partner jumped off his barstool, ran behind the bar and threw a rag over the poor thing then gently scooped it up and I opened up the front door and we took it outside and placed it on the top of the dumpster. There was no way to extricate its claws from the bar rag so we left everything and came back inside, assured the girl in the bathroom that it was safe and then went out a couple of minutes later to find that the bat had obviously recovered, unpeeled itself from the bar rag and was gone. Phew!

If it had been earlier in the evening when the place was full I can only begin to imagine what total chaos there would have been but I was thrilled the bat didn't suffer any serious damage and hopefully was able to continue munching on mosquitoes for a long time to come!
